Ralph's Story

REMEMBER ME I want to be remembered as a faithful pastor and long-time Veterans Affairs chaplain who loved both God and Country to the max at the close of life. It is my wish that my old friends and classmates remember me as a dedicated servant of the Lord, fun-loving in life, but somewhat of a rogue by nature. MY PROFILE My profile is a rich and varied one. I was born in Chattanooga, TN on August 23, 1938, at Erlanger Hospital. Most of my early years, including my teen years and early college, were in Chattanooga. I attended the Lutheran School(1944-1952), Chattanooga Central High School (1952-1956), and the University of (Tennessee) Chattanooga (1956-1958). While at UC, I became president of Der Deutsche=Kreis (German Circle). Hey, former members, please contact me if you read this!!! Especially, if you are Stefan Anacker. To finish my college work, I attended Concordia Senior College, Ft. Wayne, Indiana, where I matriculated with a B.A. Degree with a double concentration in psychology and sociology (1958-1960). Afterward, I attended Concordia Theological Seminary, Springfield, Illinois (1960-1964), graduating in 1964 with an M.Div. degree. In graduate education, I attended Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, Missouri, from 1974-1977, receiving my S.T.M. Degree. My doctorate degree, D.Min., was earned in Ft. Wayne, Indiana,in 1985 from Concordia Theological Seminary. For over 38 years, I have served as a pastor in the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, serving parishes from Oklahoma, Georgia, and Indiana since 1964. Presently, for the last 6 years, my ministry has been at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Northern Indiana Health Care System, in Ft. Wayne, Indiana, serving as chaplain. I have spent the last 25 years here in NE Indiana, at Woodburn, IN. It would be great to hear from other voices from the past! Hey, gang, email me! God bless! SCHOOLING I started my school life with Kindergarten at Mrs. Millie Jahn's home in 1943. I went to First Lutheran Elementary School from 1944-1952,at both locations on Bennett Avenue and on Belvoir Avenue, the latter known as the "new school," graduating in 1952. From there, I attended Chattanooga Central High School at the original building on Dodds Avenue. Then, it was on to the University of Chattanooga (now UTC) from 1956-1958. transferring to Concordia Senior College, Ft. Wayne, IN from 1958-1960, where I received my BA Degree. From there, my first Divine Call was to Zion Lutheran Church, Buffalo, Oklahoma. Then, it was on to Trinity Church, Woodward, OK, from 1966-1970. After 6 years, I was called to a mission congregation, Holy Trinity Church in Rome, GA, from 1970-1974, and Christ Church, Woodburn, IN from 1974-1988. After this, I became a visiting pastor to supply vacant congregations in the Indiana District of the Lutheran Church- Missouri Synod. I taught religion in parochial school for 15 years, and then became a Chaplain at the VA Medical Center, Ft. Wayne, IN from 1997 to current time (as of May, 2003). "Hello, Central, Give me a ring." Best regards, Ralph <(};R COLLEGE & SEMINARY I began my college education at University of Chattanooga (TN) in 1956 to 1958. You guys in the German Circle (Deutsche=Kreis) write or email please. Loved every minute at Concordia Senior College, Ft. Wayne, Indiana (1958-1960), where I made a best friend by rooming with Don Darrell Haug, with whom I have kept in touch occasionally by email since our graduation in June 1960!!!! WOW!!! Attending this college was one of the best highlights of my life. Also, I met my wife-to-be while a student in Ft. Wayne. She is the former Miss Susan Lauterberg of Ft. Lauderdale, FL !!!!!! My BA Degree from this college was in Liberal Arts and Sciences, with a double concentration in psychology and sociology. From here I went to seminary at Concordia in Springfield, IL (1960-1964), where I graduated with a Master of Divinity Degree. (Please see other biographies for a continuation of my college bio...) RW UPDATE! UPDATE! UPDATE! 2003-2006 I enrolled in Lutheran Hospital of Indiana's Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) extended program in 2003. To date, I have completed 2 1/2 units of CPE, and I plan on continuing on, God-willing, until I finish 4 units in 2007. Knowing the clinical model of pastoral care is vital in hospital work with patients and staff. To this end, I plan to serve the sick as a Clinical Member of the hospital team at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center-VA Northern Indiana Health Care System in Fort Wayne, IN. WORKPLACES AFTER GRADUATION I graduated from Concordia Theological Seminary in Springfield, IL in spring of 1964. My vicarage internship had been in Trenton, MI from 1962-1963. My first church was in Buffalo, OK from 1964-1966. My second parish was in Woodward, OK from 1966-1970. My third congregation was in Rome, GA, 1970-1974 and my last congregation was in Woodburn, IN, where I spent the last 15 years in the parish ministry from 1974-1988. From 1988 on I served the IN District, Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, as supply pastor until 1997 when I came to the Veterans Affairs Northern Indiana Health Care system as Chaplain in Ft. Wayne, IN. to present-(2003). Education wise, I earned an Master of Sacred Theology Degree from Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, MO, in 1977, and a Doctor of Ministry Degree from Concordia Theological Seminary, Ft. Wayne, IN, in 1985. I continue to serve the V.A. as chaplain to present, enjoying my work among our veterans in the Service of our Country, as patients in our Medical Center in Ft. Wayne, IN. God bless! RW UPDATE! ...Expand for more
UPDATE! UPDATE! 2003-2006 MY VETERANS AFFAIRS CHAPLAINCY I began my Veterans Affairs Medical Center job om December 22, 1997, and this December 22, 2008, have completed 12 years serving our veteran patients. Also, I completed 2 1/2 units of Clinical Pastoral Education(CPE) at the Lutheran Hospital of Indiana, Fort Wayne, IN, as of December 2005. This credits my resume at VA Chaplain HQ in Hampton, VA and Washington, DC with vital clinical experience in continuing education. It truly is a blessing to serve those who have served our country, and, God-willing, I will continue on in 2006 and beyond serving our veterans. RW MILITARY My military experience was limited to 3 years from 1955-1958. My outfit was 30th Armored Division, 181st Armored Field Artillery Battalion, Service Battery. My rank was Spc 4. We were stationed at the Armory on Holtzclaw Ave. in Chattanooga, TN. I enjoyed the experience, and friends I made, but my term was cut short when I left for Ft. Wayne, IN, to enter Concordia Senior College, from which I graduated with a BA in 1960 (Psychology & Sociology concentrations). We were, at this time, a 155-SP Howitzer Battalion from '56-'58. Some of my buddies were: Dave Stutz, Billy Joe Nesbitt, Stanley Hayes, Robert Hickey, and other buddies in our outfit. Guys, if your out there, write or email me sometime. God bless! LIKES I like to lean back in my easy chair and watch TV or go onto the computer after work GOING TO WORK If I'm going to work, I need to have coffee w/ cream, an energy bar, and fresh air to be able to deal with the day-to-day. MY HIGH SCHOOL HERO Miss Helen Prior, Central High School 9th grade English teacher, who taught me how to write, spell, and to speak correctly, is my hero of heroes. CLASSMATE MISSING The one person from my past who I'd most like to see again is Stefan Anacker, because he was a major part of life in our German Club "Der Deutsche Kreis" at the University of Chattanooga in 1956-58. SURPRISE! My current age is 71. When I was 12, I thought that people my age would be dead. I was so completely surprised to realize life has not disappeared after 70 years! I'm still a rogue, but stronger than ever!!!! HOME IMPROVEMENT If I could improve my home, I'd remodel the attic and add on a train room to have a layout and a place to put my American Flyer train collection. My dream home would be to build a home modeled after a 1930s Era passenger train station to display my wares. COLLEGE DORM MEMORIES One outstanding memory I recall in "Dorm B" student life was a stunt we played on our dorm proctor. He was a person who slept as long as possible and still make it to class. At that point in history (1958-59), Menon Deodorant that came in a green plastic squirt bottle. We replaced the fluid with sardine oil. After the first morning bell, he jumped out of bed and squirted under his arm pits. Needless to say, he missed his first class, and made us pay to have his clothes laundered!!! There are many more "Dorm Life Stories" that could be recalled here, but there is not enough room so to do!!! <(}-;R BEST FRIEND VS. PUBLIC VIEW My best friend would tell you I'm a fun-loving guy, but people who don't know me very well would probably describe me as quite proper and somewhat stuffy. THE WEIRDEST JOB I EVER HAD My weirdest job was being a stock clerk at Miller Brothers Department Store summer employment in Chattanooga when I was 18. I worked behind the scenes in the back area not seen by shoppers. Picture this! My boss was a 400+-lb. woman, who, because of my name, always called me a "damned Kraut." She always sat at an art drafting table on a stool because she could hardly walk. One day there was a sale on sweaters out front of the main store entrance on the Cherry Street side. I had a cart full of color solids, and had just arrived there, when a large crowd of women attacked the cart and fought over the sweaters. One customer even fell into the cart! Oh, and by the way, wages were 68 cents/hour, all paid in cash, back in those days!!! Ha! SUSAN CAROL (nee' LAUTERBERG) WETZEL I share my home with my dearest Suzi, which I find to be the love of my life for these 48 years! MY BEST FRIEND My best friend is the Reverend Daniel John Kacer, a retired pastor. He and I have been friends for some thirty-nine years. We shared many times together with golf, partying, and attending numerous church meetings together. I cannot say in words how much his friendship continues to mean to me. God is good! A CHILDHOOD MEMORY I'LL NEVER FORGET One childhood memory I will never forget was when my mother saved me from drowning. My Mom, Ruth, was sitting on the back porch steps watching me one hot summer's day. I tried to chase our cat, Brownie, across some chicken wire spread over the pond in our backyard, and down I went under the muddy pond water! Suddenly, two strong hands grabbed me and plucked me out of the water. If she had not been watching me that day when I was 16 months old, I would not be able to tell you this life's story. AND THAT'S ABOUT IT TO DATE FOR THIS INDEPENDENCE DAY, the 4th of July, 2009, in my life's saga. I always wanted to be a pastor when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a bad idea. As it turns out, they were wrong. RETIREMENT iI retired from the VA on 30 November, 201l at 73 years 3 months of age. Life seems to have sped up now. RALPH AND SUSAN WILL CELEBRATE THEIR GOLDEN WEDDING ANNIVERSARY IN 2012 God has blessed our lives a hundredfold as Suzi and I celebrate our 50th Golden Anniversary on 18 August, 2012. (Added to biography 19 June, 2012).
