Mona's Story
Steve came home from Viet Nam just before I graduated, mid-term in Jan 72. We have been together since then. Took a leave of absence in Sep as I drove around the US...alone. What an adventure!!! Saw many wonderful places and met so many different people. It was all good. Was gone 2 mos when I found out I was pregnant. I was in Florida. On the way home I met the Coca Cola singers in Pensacola, was amazed by how lit up New Orleans was, went to the Grand Canyon, can't get the cemetary in Tombstone out of my mind...our country really does have a lot to see. This experience gave me a whole new perspective on life. I was then and allways will be a Hippy. That I hold dear to my heart; plus,my faith in God. But all through High School and after I was a Civil Rights Activist with a strong desire to allways be 'HIGH'. Social activities were my priority and they were destroying me. So I made a change.
Our son, Steven was born in May 73. We married April 6 74. We just had our 37th Anniversiary. What can I say? People ask me how we do it...What I believe is I made a promise to God when I said my vows and I really cannot break promises. Plus, Love is the answer to any problem. And I pray a lot. If something needs changed, make positive changes in yourself. Our second son, Michael was born in Apr 75. He was diagnosed with Diabetes 1 when he was 4. I have become well learned on this subject through time and nutrition has been a top priority. Michael's only child, our Granddaughter, Sierra was born May 95 and she, too, was diagnosed with Diabetes 1 at the age of 4. Go figure? They said it skips a generation, but they were wrong.
Went to American River College Sep 1977. Through my...Expand for more
automotive classes I secured a job at Sunrise Sears Auto as a Tire-Buster and General Mechanics Trainee. Was a "Professional Student" for 5 yrs. Changed my Major every 3rd semester to start a new contract. Being an AF Brat has it's benefits and I was paid to go to school. Took variety of classes for 5 yrs. Found out I'm really good with Calligraphy and Mechanics. Who would've thought? A couple yrs later I made a change. No more busted knuckles, greasy fingernails, or steel toed boots. Decided car parts delivery was where I belonged. I know what parts are wrong or right, I know how to put them in, and I know Sacramento and all outside areas as I have been here since 1954. At this time we had relocated to Citrus Heights to raise our boys. Another class I took at AR was Teaching and through research I found this area to have the schooling which was conducive to what I wanted for them; and I was right. It paid off. Go San Juan High! I delivered for Riebes NAPA for a few yrs, then ROX a few yrs, then FAST Auto a few yrs. After awhile the shops were filled with young men as young as my boys and they would call me Mom. Many requests for me to deliver because I would always bring the right part...almost always. My goal was to fix delivery. As a mechanic, it was a major obstacle for us. I put pride in what I do, even if it isn't some high-class or exotic career. And I am comfortable in my own skin. The Eternal Optimist with a good sense of humor and a highly analytical mind. I can't or won't stop asking why. In 2004 I went through a major life-altering change and can no longer work and am functionally limited. But, I am alive and I have a family to love.
