Randy's Story

While at EHS my interests moved back and forth from ministry to counseling. Both interests have never left me and both have captivated my educational and vocational activities. After graduating from EHS I attended Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford, OK. I graduated in 1972 with a BS in Psychology. After college I attended Perkins School of Theology, Southern Methodist University, Dallas, Texas. For the first time in my life I found myself academically (and spiritually challenged) in ways I had never been challenged before in my life. I thought seminary would kill me. Instead, the experience stretched my mind and deepened my spirit! During seminary I met and married my first wife, Pat Coburn. Together Pat and I worked in 5 churches, bore 3 wonderful children, and collectively saw 13 different counselors. In 1992 I chose to end our marriage. I've got to admit this was the most heart wrenching and difficult decision I have ever made in my life. A true low point. Shortly after my divorce I took a leave of absence from the church and floated through a lot of work including selling advertising for the El Reno Tribune (one of my favorite jobs!) I ultimately entered the Clinical Pastoral Education program (Chaplaincy training) at Presbyterian Hospital in Oklahoma City, OK in May, 1994. I completed my hospital residency work in May, 1995. In between I served at Children's Hospital during and after the W.P. Murrah bombing (a book in itself). I married my current wife, Penny Love Wagner, in August, 1996. ood. Penny is my partner, best-friend, and spiritual mate through thick and thin (and, yes, we have known both). I pastored several churches including the United Methodist Church in Antlers, OK and several in the Oklahoma City area before completing the second part of my original calling. In December, 2003 I graduated from Southern Nazarene University with a Masters of Arts in Family Therapy. In April, 2008 I was granted a license as a Marital and Family Therapist (LMFT) in Oklahoma. I currently am retired from the United Methodist Church. I have served as the Youth Guidance Supervisor for the Oklahoma County Juvenile Detention Center, therapist at Cedar Ridge Resident Treatment Center in Oklahoma City, and currently in private practice in Edmond. I am honored that both my parents cared for and supported me until their deaths. Mom died in September, 2005. Dad died in February, 2008. I love and miss them both. I am also blessed with three children from my first marriage. Mike (30) in Des Moines, Iowa; Kim (25) in Indianola, Iowa; and Matt (23) at OU. I also enjoy a step-daughter, Jennifer Marino (29), her husband Adam, and their son, Mason (4 going on 20) in Baltimore, MD. My daughter, Kim, also has a son, Emery (5). As I look back upon my life since EHS I give thanks for the blessings and am continually amazed at what, with the blessing of God and the support of family and friends, I have been graced to enjoy and share with others. I look forward to what lies ahead. Please, don't be shy. Share your story. Write if you choose. God Bless! Randy
