Randy's Story

Life The more things change, the more they stay the same. Yes, I'm back in Illinois. No more living the Jimmy Buffett lifestyle under Florida's sunny skies, at least for now. My mother broke her hip while visiting her sister and family in Belfast, Northern Ireland in the winter of '07. Shortly thereafter, she fell down and struck her head and began showing symptons of Alzheimer's. As a resutl, I returned to Illinois in February '08 to assist in her caregiving, since my father couldn't handle her 24/7. I moved in with my friend, Karen, who lives in Marengo, Illinois. Fotrunately, I was able to transfer back to Rockford as an Assistant District Manager for Aramark Uniform Services. I thought I'd live with Karen for six months or so until I got a place in Rockford. However, I was asked to consider taking a District Manager position, which could have been anywhere in the country. However, I held off until March of 2010 when I was promoted to District Manager in Arlington Heights, Illinois. I'm still close enough to assist the family andI still live with Karen, who's become my guardian angel. Then, in July of 2010, I was promoted to Fleet and Special Projects Manager in Arlington Heights. Fortunately, I have a company car and fuel card. The commute is about the same as it is from Marengo to Rockford, but little did Karen know, that when she lived with me in Florida, she'd be returning the favor in triplicate. My son, Patrick, turned 21 in April of 2010, so he and I celebrated the occassion within limits. My grandson, Tristen, will celebrate his fifth birthday next month and his mother, Meghan, 23, returned from St. Louis, where she lived with her mother, to live in Freeport, Illinois. It's great to have the little guy back. I still return to Florida at least once a year to visit my friends and former co-workers, usually during the winter months. I miss Florida, but I believe things happen for a reason. It was like a three-year long vacation. Previous Life I transfered from Rockford, Illinois, to Tampa, Florida in Nov. '05. I was an Assistant District Manager for Aramark Uniform Services and I live in Lakeland, Florida. Lakeland is between Tampa and Orlando. I have been divorced twice and, by the way, I have pledged to remain single for the rest of my life! My parents still live in Rockford, which enables me to keep an eye on them. small pond in my backyard. Every weekend was like a vacation. I enjoyed sitting on the deck of a bayside restaurant/bar and watching the dolphins and pelicans while drinking a frozen strawberry daiquri and eating a pressed cuban sandwich. I lived less than a hour from the Gulf of Mexico and have hung out at beaches and bars from Naples in the south to Dunedin in the north. I had a friend from Freeport who lives near Daytona. He and I participated in a few of the notorius Bike Weeks. No, I don't have a bike, but he does. One of my best and lifelong friends, Jeff Dunn, West High '74, lives in Belair Beach, just north of St. Pete. He and his wife, Mary Lou, live five minutes from numerous Tampa Bay beaches. We used to get together at least once a month and on holidays. Jeff's younger brother, Jimmy, lives near me in Lakeland. Being a huge baseball fan, spring training was always awesome! Lakeland is the spring training home of the Detroit Tigers. I always took some vacation time during spring training so I could attend as many games as possible. The last year I was there, I enjoyed watching the Tigers beat those damn Yankess, who spring train in Tampa. Other Grapefruit League teams within an hour of Lakeland include the Phillies in Clearwater, the Blue Jays in Dunedin and the Astros and Dodgers in Kissimmee. I've been a Milwaukee Brewer's fan since they began. Too bad they train in Arizona with those proverbial "waiting 'til next years" Cubs. Unfortunately, while I was in Florida, the Brewers finallyreturned to the playoffs and the Bears went to the Super Bowl. I also enjoyed going to concerts at the Ford Ampitheater in Tampa. It's very similar to Alpine Valley. However, because of the awesome weather, they have big-name artists playing nearly every weekend year 'round. Just before I returned to Rockford, I was part of a huge tailgate party before the Jimmy Buffett concert. Yes, I've become a Parrothead. Why not? I was virtually living the lifestyle! College I graduated with a BA in Communications from Western Illinois University in 1982. I attended the graduate school of journalism at Northern Illinois University from 1986 to 1988, but failed to complete my thesis before I had a wife and two kids to support. The university employeed me as a graduate teaching assistant, assigned to teach the lab portion of the basic journalism course. I left graduate school to become City Editor of the Freeport (Illinois) Journal Standard and worked there from 1989 until 1995.
