Randy's Story
A.K.A. MAGOO
Spring Valey High: I played Trombone in the band and was in AF JROTC.
After U. of SC, I went to work for Digital Equipment Corp. (DEC) as an Educational Specialist teaching courses in programming, RT-11, and VAX/VMS. I traveled a lot spending a lot of time in the Boston area at the Bedford training facility. I also spent some time at the Dallas training facility. After two years, I was looking for something different and as luck would have it an old friend from USC showed up in one of my classes. Turns out they were looking for someone to help support their new VAX system, so off I went to Northwestern University.
At Northwestern I worked in the Vogelback computing center supporting both the VAX/VMS system and programming a Modcomp system that provided front end terminal (yes, those old CRTs) connections for a CDC Cyber mainframe. As much as I loved the VAX, the Modcomp was actually more interesting as one of ...Expand for more
my first challenges was to change the system to allow auto-baud/parity detection. But the Modcomp went to the wayside after a few years and I worked mostly on the VAX and started doing some training classes and some consulting work on the side. I met my wife Vicki while at NU and she retired after the birth of our first son David.
After 9 years, I left NU to work at Motorola supporting their new global e-mail system. Then on to NeXT computers and eventually doing Windows server support. Our second son, Sean, was born two years after David and one year after switching to Motorola.
After 14 years with Motorola, they outsourced their IT support to CSC. I continued with Windows support, but eventually moved over to leading the Citrix support team. After 6 years I moved over to the new Virtual Desktop Service Center as the principal lead.
We like to travel a lot and would love to visit if we're in your area. Just drop us a line.
