Raymond's Story

My Story.... What a long strange trip it's been! Mostly my own choosing but strange just the same. I was inducted (drafted) into the U.S. Army in October of '66. The military needed cannon fodder for the up-coming Tet offensive in Viet Nam. During my 2 years in the service of our country I got a chance to read Bertrand Russels Äppeal to the American Concience". This was a turning point in my life! No more Mr. nice guy! No more just taking whatever they dished out! I joined The Committee for G.I. Rights, met Andy Stapp and Dick Perrin (google them to find out more) and became an Anti-War activist in the Army. Probably not a wise choice but I was convinced we had no business in that country. I was Court Martialed for my participation in Anti-War activities And for my non-participation in Army activities, was written about in " The Realist"Magazine and also "Life"Magazine. I managed to get an honorable discharge in Oct. of '68. From there I attended Lincoln Land Comm. College in Springfield Il. where I continued my Anti-War actions. Back in High School I had started to drink. After the service my drinking increased, I also discovered the wonders of weed. My drinking became worse and I lived in a stupor for the n...Expand for more
ext 8 years. Then I met the girl of my dreams at a 3 day Rock Concert. We ended up getting married and I was able to control my drinking for about 2 years, but my buddy Bud...weiser got the better of me and my marriage. I was divorced in '79. I spent the next 7 years in another drunken stupor. I finaly had enough an in '86 I quit drinking and am still sober today. I currently live in Springfield Il. and work at The "Springfield ARC" where I am a Vocational Specialist. I currently holt the Direct Support Professional-Registered credential. I am a founding member of "The Illinois Direct Support Professionals". I attended the DSP's to DC march on Washington in '07. and will be a presenter at the Direct Support Workforce in Baltimore Md. in May of this year. I also hope to return to DC for the DSP's to DC event again this year. Well may has come and gone. Baltimore was fabulous. I was busy, busy, busy most of the time, so I wasn't able to get out and about much. I did get by the New Old Camden Yard and the Ravens Stadium. Also got down to the Inner Harbor area Presentation went very well! People actually listened and responded with relevant questions. More later this could be the beginning of another Strange Trip.
