Raymond's Story

Life My life since Dickinson has been an incredible journey. After graduation I continued dating Rose Ann De Stefano and began night school at Jersey City State. However I joined the Navy in 1969 and spent most of time at sea as a Radioman 2nd Class (E5) aboard USS Terrebonne Parish (LST1156) and USS Robert K. Huntington (DD781). The years I spent in the Navy were difficult, but I did travel to Europe for the first time and it changed my life. After seeing Paris, I vowed to spend as much time in Europe in my life as possble. I am happy to say that by 2007, I have spent about half of my adult life in Europe and my wife Cristy and I now live in Normandy, France during the tour season and we spend our winters in the Tampa Bay, Florida area. After the Navy, I married Rose but the marriage only lasted less than two years - but we parted friends -which we still are and we had no kids. I graduated from JCSC in 1975 and then backpacked around Europe. I got a MS degree in Trasportation Planning from Polytechnic University of NY in Brooklyn and met the love of my life, Cristy in 1977. I worked in the Mayor Paul Jordan's office in Jersey City and later at the Hudson County Planning Board. In 1978 I became the Director of the Subregional Transportation Planning Program for Morris County and I moved to Parsippany. I was the boss, but I was bored - Cristy and I wanted to live in Europe. I applied for a position as an Operations Officer with the CIA and went through the application process for almost a year when I was told abru...Expand for more
ptly that I didn't get the position - this saved my life because I was supposed to be assigned to the Middle East and almost surely would have been in the US Embassy in Beirut when terrorists blew it up in 1982 when every CIA Operations Officer assigned to the region was killed. In 1988 we moved to Orlando and then to the Tampa Bay area in 1996. We began traveling to Europe often and formed our business, Historic Tours, Inc. in 1983. Some of you may remember that I always had a love of history and our company designs and I personally guide WWII Commemorative Tours of Europe. We began our business to commemorate the 40th anniversary of D-Day in 1984 and I am the Tour Director for the White House and Congress when VIP's visit Normandy - but we work all across Europe. We are also the Tour Directors for the "Band of Brothers" and The History Channel. In 1986 we began working closely with Guido Papa and his brother Phil and ever since their travel agency in Secaucus has been our booking office. They're great guys. We chose not to have kids and for ourselves it was the right decision. Cristy and I just had our 25th wedding anniversary and 2007 will be the 30th anniversary of when we met. We could not be happier. We have a beautiful home on Omaha Beach in France and a condo at the famous "clothing optional" resort of Paradise Lakes, Florida. We are attending our class 40th reunion in Secaucus on April 14 before continuing on to France to begin our tour season. I would love to hear from any of my classmates. Ray
