Raymond's Story
Life
I started out as a family doctor but I became very interested in terrorism and counter-terrorism. I started working in the field of biodefense (biological counter-terrorism) in 1998 and in 2003 I left medical practice completely to pursue this career full time. Now I work at the National Center for Biodefense, just outside Washington, DC, doing research into diseases such as anthrax, plague, tularemia, and HIV. I'm happy to say that in the last 1 1/2 years I've made some very interesting and important discoveries. I also teach a graduate level college course on "the medical response to bioter...Expand for more
rorism" at George Mason University in Virginia.
On a personal note, I've been married for 30 years (to the same woman) and have a son at UCLA and a daughter who just started veterinary school in Virginia. My work requires long hours of committment, but it's interesting and exciting work, so it's worth it. I published a book on biological and chemical terrorism in 2003 and just finished co-writing a text book on anthrax.
If someone had told me 10 years ago that I would be living on the east coast and doing the work I do, I wouldn't have believed it. I'm certainly not where I expected to be.
