Rebecca's Story

Life My life as a child involved a number of geographical moves because of churches my parents pastored and, consequently, I've established many "communities" in my lifetime. I've taken the liberty to write a more detailed bio in hopes of reconnecting with many people I haven't seen in awhile! So, if you get bored, just jump to the time we knew each other and read from there!! My life began on my father's birthday, October 29, 1951, in Owensboro, KY; the oldest of three daughters born to L.A. & Ava Talbert, Southern Baptist pastors. After living in Maceo, KY where my parents pastored Maceo Baptist Church for the first year of my life, we moved to Tazewell, VA where they accepted the pastorate at Fincastle Baptist Church. About two years later we moved to Rockingham, NC where they pastored Cartledge Creek Baptist Church. In 1958 we moved back to Tazewell, VA to the same church and where I began my public education. In January 1964 we moved to Sugar Grove, NC where my parents pastored Cove Creek Baptist Church until the end of 1966. Then we moved back to Rockingham, NC where they pastored the same church as previously, and where I graduated from high school in 1970. (See my School Bio for details.) Don't worry if you didn't keep up with all of that - I've had trouble, too!! From there, I moved to Greensboro, NC to attend University of NC at Greensboro. (See my College Bio for details.) My family in the meantime moved to Winston-Salem, NC and pastored Easton Baptist Church. I left UNC-G at the end of my sophomore year (1972) and moved to Charlotte, NC where I lived until 1996. During this time I worked fulltime for three companies (primarily in the area of accounting) and part-time in several churches as accompanist, choir director and worship leader. (See my Workplace Bio for details.) I met my husband Mike in 1978 at a church function at Midwood Baptist Church, Charlotte, NC. We began dating in 1979 and were married on November 15, 1980. Last year we celebrated 26 wonderful years!! I have two step-children, Marshall, age 36, and Meredith, age 32, who live in Florida. Both are married and have children, giving us a total of 8 grandchildren and 3 step-grandchildren!!! Mike and I served as pastors of Steele Creek Baptist Church for about 4 years and then as associate pastors of MorningStar Fellowship Church for approximately 4 years, both in Charlotte, NC. In 1996 we founded Firestarter Ministries International, sold our house and began traveling across the USA ministering in churches and cell groups. It was one of the most exciting and rewarding times of our life. During our travels in 1997, we became affiliated with Singing Waters Ministries in Ontario, Canada and subsequently moved to Ontario and were a part of their team from January 1998 to June, 2003, when we returned to the States. We have since served as pastors of Great Commission Fellowship in Powder Springs, GA about 20 miles West of Atlanta, and live in the little town of Hiram. We have a wonderful congregation and are very excited to see how they are growing in their relationship with the Lord. We continue to minister through Firestarter Ministries, as well. Since returning to the USA, I completed a long-awaited Bachelor's Degree in Theology in 2005! As a result of our relationships through the years and through our ministry, we now have many spiritual children all around the world! Needless to say, my life (regardless of any detours) has always centered on my relationship with the Lord and my church life. Having been freed from a life dominated by fear, I can honestly say that beginning in 1996, I have been living my dream to see people become all they were created to be. Mike and I are committed to equipping them to "Live with Purpose and Love with Passion." Now that you've caught up with me, I'd love to hear from you and see what your life has been like since we...Expand for more
last saw each other! School My family moved several times so I attended just as many schools: Tazewell Elementary from September 1958 through December 1963 Cove Creek Elementary from January 1964 through June 1966 Watauga High School from September-December 1966 Rockingham High School from January 1967 through June 1970 (graduation) College I attended the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, NC from 1970-1972. I began school as a music major and then changed to elementary education, subsequently leaving UNC-G at the end of my sophomore year. In 2003 I began working to complete my bachelor's degree through Christian Life School of Theology in Columbus, GA and received a Bachelor of Theology Degree in 2005. Workplace After leaving UNC-G at the end of my sophomore year in 1972, I became a "working girl." Since I didn't complete my degree, the primary skills I had that could help me secure a job were typing and math. I moved to Charlotte, NC where I worked for two years with MONY (Mutual of New York) as an Application Clerk. In 1974 I went to work in the Accounting Department of Mauney Piping Supply Company as an Accounting Clerk and was promoted to the position of Accounting Manager. In 1977 I accepted a job with Marshall Air Systems, a manufacturing company of custom ventilation and cooking equipment for the fast food industry. I began as an Accounting Supervisor and over the next 18-1/2 years, as the company grew to become a multi-million dollar firm, I became their Controller as well as a corporate officer. In April 1996 I left the Company to pursue my lifelong passion of fulltime ministry. In addition to fulltime jobs, I also held part-time jobs in several churches as accompanist, choir director and worship leader over a period of 26 years. From 1985-1989 my husband, Mike, and I pastored Steele Creek Baptist Church in Charlotte. Then, from 1992-1996 we served as Associate Pastors of MorningStar Fellowship also in Charlotte. During this time I served as the Director of the MorningStar Women's Ministry; was a member of MorningStar Fellowship’s Ministry Team; and a prophetic ministry team leader for MorningStar Fellowship and MorningStar conferences from 1992 until 1996. I was ordained in 1996 by MorningStar Fellowship of Ministries. In 1996 Mike and I founded Firestarter Ministries International out of a vision to equip churches for the purpose of obeying Jesus’ Great Commandment and Great Commission. We traveled to local churches and cell groups throughout the United States for two years, conducting training courses in prophetic ministry, evangelism and healing. During our travel in 1997, FMI became affiliated with Singing Waters Ministries (formerly Ellel Ministries) of Orangeville, Ontario, and joined their Leadership Team in 1998. Singing Waters is a Christian Retreat Centre whose heart is to reach out to people with healing and restoration. I was a principal teacher and also served as Centre Manager (giving oversight to the physical operation of the Ministry) and Team Pastor for the Canadian Ministry until Mike and I returned to the USA in 2003. We joined the Pastoral Team of Great Commission Fellowship Church (GCF) in August of 2003 and became Senior Pastors in August of 2004. GCF is a non-denominational cell-based church located in Powder Springs, GA about 20 miles West of Atlanta. In addition to pastoring GCF, we still minister through FMI and are very blessed to now have two additional team members, Kate Murphy and Therese Tong. We have ministered in the United States, Canada, England and Australia and are committed to travel wherever the Lord leads us throughout the world, equipping churches to "Live with Purpose and Love with Passion." Our ministry seeks to help people discover their birthright in God, and then teach and motivate them to seize and possess their inheritance in Christ.
