Rebecca's Story
Following the memorable summer of 1979, I joined the Navy with broad plans of setting out on new adventures as a military photographer. Adventurous it was! After attending school for almost a year in Pensacola Florida, I settled at my first duty assignment with the Combat Camera Group at Oceana Naval Air Station in Virginia Beach. This was an incredible time in my life and I truly loved living in Virginia Beach. What an awesome place to be a young adult.
Hoping to make the Navy a career, in 1983 I asked my Navy detailer for orders to the USS Shenandoah, because the ship was brand new and not yet commissioned. ame one of my more memorable titles. I flew to San Diego three months prior to the maiden voyage and commissioning of the ship. Following our "sea-trials" (where I developed some real "sea legs after becoming seasick for the first three days) me and my shipmates were underway for Norfolk Naval Station, Destroyer and Submarine Piers. In route to Norfolk, the ship traveled through the Panama Canal which I will never forget the thrill of. Being aboard a ship while the canal "locks" filled with water was really something to behold! While serving aboard the Shenandoah for two years, I spent three months in Cuba, and did see a few places with some fun liberty port visits. Jamaica, British West Indies, The Bahamas, Cancun, and Acapulco to name a few.
