Rebecca's Story

Life I miss Maine! Married to a (very hot) Lt. Col in the Marine Corps. We have 7 children, (thought I better get that out in the open right at the start,) 2 of which are still up- at 12:30 am., and 2 Australian shepherds. We live in the mountains of North Carolina. It is very beautiful here. But I still dream of going back to Maine, and seeing my old street, with the trees making a canopy over the road... and Portland Headlight, with the rocky coastline. There's nothing like that here. In fact, it's a 6 hour drive to the nearest ocean. Can you imagine?! I didn't like the Q&A thing, because it's multiple choice. (Yuck!) But I love running, biking, hiking, baking, reading good, (especially funny,) books, (NOT "How-To" books!) and watching great movies with Michael- or the kids, or both. Our whole family loves interesting conversation, ideas, and being with internationals, especially Africans, for lots of reasons, one of which is their frankness, and outspokenness about their faith. The kids love history, and I have learned a lot by watching and listening to them! Oh, by the way, we home school, which I never dreamed I'd do, never wanted to do, but I guess God directs our way... whatever our plans may be. He's definitely directed my way, our way, in a way that has made me extremely happy and content. I never thought I would live in such a lovely place, surrounded by such great people, or that I would be able to like the same guy for so many years, or that teenagers could be so nice! And certainly never imagined I'd weigh the same at 37 as I did at 18. Well, that's kind of a deviation, and most of you know by now that the weight may stay the same, but, well, it's kind of shifted, if you know what I mean. :) In any case, life is good. I wish more of my classmates would post here, but a lot of them are probably die-hard private people, and figure that anyone worthwhile they'll probably see at church anyway. I'm just guessing about that... I've lost track of everyone, which is completely my fault, but it's still hard. I may post a photo, if this comes to anything. We'll see... I've heard rumors of a plan for a reunion next summer. By the way- PLEASE e-mail me directly if you want to. This website won't let me give you my e-mail address unless I put it in code- so if you can figure it out- we're in business! rlb (at) overtheway (dot com) I'm not a member, so I can't even see who's viewed my profile, and I'd love to hear from you! School Well, I think every girl in our class (at one time or another,) had a crush on Doug Price. (Oh, admit it!) I never met anyone so nice or polite-who could run so fast, beat everyone in arm wrestling, and absolutely wouldn't hit a girl- and to top it all off, he was cute! (I'm thinking of 4th grade here..)Anyway, first impressions last a long time. I have 4 boys, and I always think of Doug as the standard I want them to match up to. (Um, also have 3 girls, who give those boys lots of practice at self-control!) The teacher who inspired me most was Miss Tague- with her boxes of Pop Rocks, and bubble gum, which we could obtain by winning a math or spelling bee. I think that was wh...Expand for more
en I decided to work hard at school. In high school, Mrs. Libby made the deepest impression on me, and instilled in me a love of music, culture, and languages. Probably the funniest thing, (although there were many,) that ever happened to me at GPCS, is only funny in retrospect... Remember the campout we went on in 4th grade? To Mt.Blue state park -or someplace like that- and Sturbridge Villiage? My mom made me wear my furry, yellow, footed, Winnie the Pooh PJs, because it would be cold. Well, I didn't realize they had a giant hole, until I went out of the tent to find the facilities, and ran into quite a group of you who weren't in bed yet, (not in the least!) I think because of the earnestness of my errand, I wasn't aware of my posture, which was kind of bent, in an attempt to cover the hole, and I must've looked pretty silly, because everyone just busted out laughing uncontrollably. Later in life, I have often wondered what my mom was thinking, making me wear those things- on a class campout!! How totally uncool... One other thing that amuses me, upon reflection, is that when we came back to Maine, after spending two years in Florida, Karen McCalmon remembered me most for my oft' cheese covered fingers. (At least that's what she told me!!) And also for spilling my canned peaches all over my shirt one day in 5th grade. Amazing! I will never forget my sister, Esther, beating John Nevers in tetherball, and how he was so angry that he hit the wall with his fist, and broke his wrist! I'll also always remember Jon Libby and Chris Goodall for their amazing impressions of Van Halen, (remember Jon's jump??) and Boston... Wow... what a sound that was... I still love to hear Boston- mainly for how they remind me of Jon and Chris! Lastly- do you all remember how Dan Hales was the only one who really appreciated U2 in those days? I never listened to them, because their music was so loud and bangy! But I want to say that I was an idiot! I had the chance to go see them in college, and I chose not to go. (Aaaagh!) So now- a couple of years ago I was looking through my husbands' music, and he has almost every album they ever made. Lots of times when I get in the car and turn it on, his music blasts me out of my seat, and I turn it off. But he was in Iraq, so I decided to listen to it- see what it's all about... Well, I don't have room to explain how it happened, but Edge kind of won me over initially, with Van Diemen's Land, which stuck with me for a long time, but then eventually I got over feeling Bono was so stuck up, and started listening to his words. Larry is easy to like, and Adam, too, I suppose... I regret so much not going to see them when I had the chance... I do think they have actually improved their sound and lyrics- Dan may disagree, but I REALY liked their last album- and after 20 plus years- what group gets better?! Probably Dan is over them now, and I am now a diehard fan- who would give anything to see them in person. Looking back on how I thought- in high school, I'm ashamed of how shallow I was. My older kids are much more balanced than I was, with a much broader view of the world. Thank goodness!
