Reed's Story
Life
I went to Wightman School, then got kicked out of Allderdice for cutting class the whole junior year, went to Kiski Prep - got expelled for drinking beer and cutting class, (see any trend there?), went to Pitt and lasted two years before deciding I wanted to see the world, which I did. I'm married to a Big Island girl from Hawaii - 24 years now and living in Maryland with two kids - a son in the workforce and a artist daughter married to a great guy. The wife's fine, the kids are still killing me slowly.
I finished 33 years of service and am retired from the military...I was a Lieutenant Commander with the US Coast Guard, joined in '78 and have lived all over the world (in a tree-house on the beach in Hawaii, Alaska, Texas, Guam, Puerto Rico, Washington State, Manhattan and finally Washington, DC) until settling down here. Started in the Coast Guard working in Search and Rescue most of my career. I've enjoyed it and have been able to travel - too much it seems sometimes - on the Coast Guard's dime. I spent four years inspecting Cruise Ships being built in Europe, spent some time in the Coast Guard's Investigations branch - lots of Britain, France, Germany, Netherlands & North Africa trips with that. Since then I was been 'kicked upstairs' and I ran the Coast Guard's Emergency Response program at our Headquarters in Washington, DC, liaising with the Pentagon and other Federal agencies. Ended up getting two Baccalaureate degrees even with my spo...Expand for more
tty educational record in my younger years, if I can find any spare time I'll finish my Masters, but will probably wait until I'm out completely bored with retirement.
I look pretty much the same, not nearly as skinny as I was in high school, I'm 6'6" and 250 pounds, but it's pretty well distributed from going to the gym and being in the Military. I play tennis regularly in USTA leagues so I can still move my body well for a guy who is at the far end of his 50's. At least I have all my hair, and not too much 'silver' in it yet. I volunteer with some community groups and try to give back something if I can. I find that the more I do that the better I feel; what a coincidence!
I get back to PGH about five times a year to visit old friends I've kept in touch with, and each time I forget how very pretty the city, and the women, are. I miss it sometimes and still hold the pride of being a Pittsburgh guy. I do miss my old friends and would like to hear from anyone who cares to get in touch. I'm pretty diligent about returning emails, so drop a line and let me know how you are. Maybe it's something about middle age, but I have felt a need to let the people I grew up with know that I appreciated their friendships when we were younger, and I truly feel that whatever I've become in life, a good husband, father or Officer, it's because of the influences that my friends had on me.
All in all it has been a good life so far and is getting better each year.
