Renee's Story

** Where I've Been ** I moved to Houston, TX, within months of graduating in 1980 and was married in April, 1981. I was married for 10-1/2 years, but have been divorced for 17 years with no plans to remarry any time soon. I have two wonderful children (son, James, 26; and daughter, Taryn, 22) and three grandchildren (twins, Kailey and Kameron, 4, and Paige, born 3/31/09). I have lived in various areas throughout the state of Texas, including Houston, and the DFW and Panhandle regions. In addition to living in Texas, I have returned to Shreveport twice to live, but left there within 3 years of returning. I have recently moved back to Houston after living in SW Virginia for 3 years. ** Work I've Done ** I have worked as an Admin Assistant and in various accounting support positions. In 2005, I was forced to apply (and was approved) for disability thru Social Security. However, I have managed to stay busy with a variety of things that are going to help me re-enter the workforce in a few years, but allow me the ability to work a schedule that will not interfere when my illness flares up. ** Travel - Places I've Been ** I enjoy traveling when I have the opportunity to do so. In 2001, I won an all-expenses paid Extreme Vacation to Costa Rica. I was able to spend 7 days and 6 nights traveling the country and experiencing many of the sports are available in that country - including Whitewater rafting on a Class IV river, scuba diving, and canopy tours. One of the highlights of my trip was the fact that one of the stops on the trip had me staying within 2 miles of an active volcano, Arenal. It was fabulous and I do hope to return there again in the future. I have also been able to travel to Canada, Washington, DC, Chicago, and San Francisco. When I went to California a few years ago, I opted to take Amtrak instead of flying - mostly because I had the time to actually take the train and could enjoy some of the sights along the way. ** School and College ** As a child, my family moved around a lot and, as a result, I attended many schools throughout south and east Texas and Caddo Parish. As a teenager, I spent the majority of those years at Broadmoor ...Expand for more
Junior High, but transferred briefly to Linwood Junior High at the end of my 8th grade year. I spent my Freshman & Sophomore years (1976-1978) at Ruston High School and as a resident at the Methodist Children's Home. After leaving Ruston, I returned to Shreveport where I completed my high school education at Huntington High School (1978-1980). One of the things that I put on hold while I worked to raise my children was college. However, now that they are grown, I have taken advantage of the freedom that I have gained by returning to school in pursuit of a Business Administration degree which I hope to transform into a Bachelor's degree in both Accounting and Web Design. I have to admit that going back to school after a 27 year absence has been a huge adjustment to make. It took me two full semesters to get back into the swing of studying and submitting assignments. I have discovered that I still do not like to write essays, but I still enjoy math. However, it has not been that difficult to adjust because at the end of my first semester in college, I had made the Dean's List and was offered membership in Phi Theta Kappa (National Honor Society for Two-Year Colleges). ** Hobbies ** The things that I enjoy in my leisure time are just as diverse as myself. I enjoy dancing (especially country), attending outdoor concerts and fairs, camping, creating signature tags and graphics for my online friends, learning new computer programs, and playing video games (especially Nintendo's Zelda games). I also enjoy get-togethers with my family and friends, as well as spending time with my children and grandchildren. I knew I enjoyed being a parent, but I am finding that I love being a grandparent just as much, if not more. I could go on, but you guys would be bored reading everything. I would love to be able to meet up with some of my friends from Huntington and Ruston High Schools. I would especially love to catch up with anyone who resided at the Methodist Children's Home in Ruston, LA, during the years of 1976-1978! I hope that life has been treating everyone well over the years, and I hope to hear from you all soon! Have a great day! Renee Lee Tidmore
