Retha's Story

I am caring for the elderly at Bee Hive Assisted Livings in Farmington, NM. I have been married for 37 years. I have five step children, one son, eight grand children and five great grand children from my step children. I am blessed in many ways. My Mother lives in Bloomfield, NM and I live very close to her. Daddy passed away in 1997 and Linda my sister lives in El Paso we are still very close. Mary, my younger sister was murdered in 1989 in Hobbs ,NM. I love working with our homes and residents. I am a certified CNA, Administrator, and Marketing Director for our Franchises. I lost contact with most of the people from Eunice. As I've matured I have come to appreciate the qualities of a small community. I still prefer small towns to larger ones. I now know that we had many advantages in Eunice. We were all so anxious to grow up and leave but now I often long for the simpler and more personal contacts we had then. The positives definitely outweighed the negatives. I guess what really made me look at this sight was a desire to know what happened to everyone. I know I've certainly lived through many things I never expected. Some good and some bad but all my experiences are what has made me who I am today and I am basically happy with who I have become and I am looking forward to the next experience coming my way. My husband is my hero. He taught me that in spite of mistakes I made, that I still had value. I blow off steam by vegging out, spending time with loved ones and friends, Art, reading, and when traveling, books on disk If I'm going to work somewhere, I need to have God , Prayer, and Peace to be able to deal with the day-to-day. I've learned from my children and life that about the time you think you have it figured out it will change and you only know what they are doing, when you are looking at them and then you're usually missing something. our sense of humor, you're going to need it. If I won $100 million, I'd give 10% of it to God, then spend the rest on family , friends and others less fortunate. My current age is 59. When I was 12, I thought that people my age now would be ancient, inactive, or dead.. I was so completely wrong. I want to continue to learn and grow. I don't feel that aging is a bad thing and I am looking forward to the rest of my life. My best friend would tell you I'm caring and compassionate, but people who don't know me very well would probably describe me as opinionated and Aloof. I guess this is because I've been an employer so long that I'm cautious, and pretty conservative until I get to know people. I share my home with my husband and pets, which I find very comfortable. I still cosider him my best friend even after 37 years of marriage. In 10 years, I hope to be retired. I'm going to get there by working hard. I was just awarded an administrator of the year award by Bee Hive Homes. I appreciated it so much, but I am fully aware that no one person can accomplish anything worth while without the combined efforts of all involved. My work with our residents is a blessing in my life every day. My birth Father just passed away recently. I had searched for him since I was sixteen and we finally found him eight years ago. He had made his living as an artist for the last 30 years and had been living in Mountain Home, Arkansas. 04/27/2009 I've been out of contact for a while. Walking a tough path. My husband was hospitalized March 10th with kidney failure resulting from his heart not pumping enough blood to them. Luckily they were able to regain kidney function and he didn't have to go on dialysis. They put in a pace maker and the Dr. says he probably has another year of quality life left, possibly two. He is back home now and recovering slowly, and I'm thanking God for every precious day. After all he's really in control not us or the Dr.
