Rhoda's Story

Born in Salt Lake City, I moved with our family during my teenage years from Albuquerque, New Mexico to Central Point, Oregon before we settled on Polson, Montana for two years. We lived on Finley Point the first year, picking cherries and swimming down the sun's reflected golden trail in the waters of Flathead Lake. Winters we froze while climbing the hill to the busstop - the happiest days were when the bus couldn't make it and we got to stay home. 4-H club and the county fair at Ronan were a blast. We moved into town in my Sophomoe year, and I fell in love with small towns. Robert Hambly, Gary Hirst, Mary Johnson, Martha Dunn, Georgine Harrel (sic?) so many wonderful friends that played a part in memories of band with Mr. Slatter (sic), choir with Dr. Jeffers, going to scary movies at the theatre, etc. I worked that last summer for Ms. Lyons in the library. We moved to Pocatello, Idaho, where Sharon and I finished high school, and then eventually ended up back in Salt Lake City, where I got married at 18 and settled down to motherhood. And boy, did I settle down! Ten children later and working full time in the Granite School District, first as a reading aide and later...Expand for more
in the front office as a full time secretary, I realized that I was starved for academic food, and ended up going back to school in 1993. I had a lot of support from many people, and finished my degree in Sociology in 2002 at Utah State University in Logan, Utah. For a short time I worked in a village where young, unwed mothers could live with their children and receive instruction in living skills. I was the instructor. Later, I worked for an adoption agency. The benefits and wages (or lack thereof) were an important factor the drove me back to the schools. I love being retired and keep myself busy substituting for the Harmonica Band director, being on the Senior Center Advisory Board, taking exercise classes (boy, am I glad for good classes!) and playing Grandma to a host of adorable children. (If I'd have known it was this much fun, I'd have skipped having my own children and gone onto Grandmotherhood immediately.) My values are God, then family, then a happy, productive way to enjoy the present. "Infinite gradititude for the past, Infinite service to the present, and infinite responsibility to the future" is on of my favorite sayings. (Along with amillion others!)
