Rhonda Suzanne's Story

Life I continue to live and die by the school calendar -- new clothes, new school supplies, the thrill of a new year and not messing up... It's all so exciting! Now my school calendar has changed. I'll be starting earlier. However, I get a ski week. Have I mentioned that I don't ski? I switched schools this year. Rather than being at an elementary, I'm at an elementary that's going K-8. It's been interesting because it's all new and you can't predict ANYTHING. LOL. Next year we add 7th grade. However, I think I'll stay at 6th until I'm an expert. There were a lot of things I would do differently. I forgot my elementary training and thought "middle" school. The students still needed "elementary." SIGH. That's what reflection is all about. BTW, education here is still weird and not as good as it could be. If you were in a coma, you'll know we didn't have a budget. Not the budget we have cuts our already inferior educational system more. For those not in the know, the Reganator (Schwartzenager(sp) wants to do for teachers what Regan did for air traffic controllers. Isn't he sweet?). I tell you, following CA is like asking the blind man to show you how to engage the safety on an AK-47. A little exciting, definitely exhillerating, and ultimately just jack-ass stupid. You get shot, you asked for it. So it's late winter 2009. I'm still living in Sunnyvale with my "boys". I'm still working on being at a "normal" weight, which for me is not even close to BMI right! LOL. I'm listening to my son and his friend who got up at 6:00 AM when we went to bed late. YUCK. I have my friends, my jazzercise crew, and my family. I lead a very blessed life. I know it. I cherish it even if it doesn't look that way. My son, Keb, will be 8 and is in 2nd grade. He still has attitude to spare. I feel for his second grade teacher. I think he messes with her. SIGH. Why is it ALWAYS the children of teachers who act like this? Marriage continues to be a wonderful enigma. I'm incredibly fortunate to find someone who's willing to play Felix to my Oscar and still love me. After all, it's not often yo...Expand for more
u meet someone who's willing to endure your BS because being with you is better than being without you. There's a lot to say for that. Life is good. Teaching is great -- no money but great. Remember, do it right the first time because that's the right thing to do. Cheers! School East made me appreciate college A LOT! Socially, it was the 80s and, let's face it, it was just painful to deal with all the conservative people hanging out waiting to become their parents. Seriously Regan was just an AWFUL president. My teachers, however, were just amazing and talented. The drive that many had to create a top-notch education that was interesting and connected the students to the rest of the world is priceless. To be specific (but not good with spelling), Kay McCullum, Dennis Forker, John Phillips, Mr. Bock, George the Journalism God, the four Social Studies Studs (Stan and the rest), and probably a few more if I could only remember... So in retrospect, the education was great, my friends were cool, the environment ok, and leaving was liberating. College Grand View was probably the best education I could have received. There I discovered others who shared passion, drive, and desire for more. For a place that was WAY too close to home, it was a fantastic education that helped me pass the MSAT (teacher test covering ALL types of knowledge from art to literature to math and science) approximately 10 years after graduation without doing any sort of prep for it. It was well worth my HORRENDOUS student loans... Workplace Where do I start... location, type, duration, level of tedium and red tape. Essentially I've done it all on some level -- food, retail, government, non-profit, for profit, and medical. Not one of them beats teaching. For those who want some sort of weird accounting, here are all the company names I can remember, in no particular order: Des Moines Public Library, Dairy Queen, Eggshell, Lane Bryant, WHEDA, IDEMA, Christie Clinic, Ovens of Brittany, University of Illinois, Farm Bureau Life Insurance, Kelly Services, and San Jose Unified School District. Wonder where I'll be next...
