Rich's Story
Life
Well, I went to Hodgkins Jr. High in Augusta and was looking forward to going to Cony and graduating in '86 with my friends from Hodgkins. But that summer I went to visit my mother in Denver and wound up staying. It would have broken her heart if I left and I couldn't do that. I also had issues with my father in Maine that I wasn't ready to face. At first it was just going to be a couple years then it wound up being all four. My high school experience in Denver was miserable. I didn't even want to go to my own graduation and never even bought a yearbook. To this day I wish I had gone to Cony. While on Leave from the army, I attended my sister Melissa's Cony graduation in '89. She had purchased a copy of the '86 Coniad I would have owned if I had gone there. I read it cover to cover over and over. There were so many people I recognized all the way back to my elementary school years at Gilbert. I actually cried when I realized what I had missed out on. re what path my life might have taken if I had decided to stay in Augusta. I just wish I could go back in time and have that decision over again knowing now what I didn't know then. After spending 5 years in the Army as a heavy anti-armor weapons crewman in Panama and Ft. Lewis WA, I moved back to Denver and went to college but never graduated. I spent more time working than in class and eventually couldn't swing it financially anymore. Since then, I've tried lots of different jobs trying to find what would make me happiest. I've always done well in whatever I've tried and made some good friends along the way but something was always missing. Recently I came home to Maine for a family reunion and decided to stay. In spite of Maine's problems, it feels like home and I'm glad to be back. It would be nice to see any of those kids from the class of '86 but it seems they've all gone away except for a few. Still, I think I'm going to stay and maybe I'll be lucky enough to run into one of my old friends once in a while.
