Rich's Story

For more information, and ways to contact me directly, see my LinkedIn profile. (1) How do you hope old friends remember you? I hope that old friends remember me as being generous and kind. (2) I always wanted to be a _____ when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a _____ idea. As it turns out, they were _____. When I was in college, I set my sights on a career as a Management Consultant (well-paid, influential), and family and friends supported my aspirations. After a satisfying 30 year career as an internal corporate consultant and a consultant in private practice to Fortune 500 companies, I find that my visions were founded solidly on inherent talent and developed skills that as a young man I didn't have the perspective to recognize. (3) How do you blow off steam? Describe your favorite way to relax. I blow off steam by physically exercising. I workout at the gym, play a game of racquetball, go for a long bicycle ride, or take a hike in the country near a river, stream or a lake, or take a long walk on the beach at the water's edge. Followed by a eucalyptus-scented steam room, alternating hot tub/cold tub, and a 90-minute massage. Following the physical exercise, I enjoy an intimate conversation with my wife, Jane, about what built-up the head of steam in the first place. (4) What's the wildest thing you ever did in school? I didn't do very wild things in high school, but I'd appreciate an alternate view from a more objective pair of eyes. (5) If I'm going to work somewhere, I need to have _____, _____, and _____ to be able to deal with the day-to-day. If I'm going to work somewhere, I need to have a cell phone, a laptop, and comfortable bed at night to be able to deal with the day-to-day. (6) Do you have a hero? Talk about where your inspiration comes from. Hmmm ... I don't place people on pedestals. My inspiration comes from a strong relationship with the Great Spirit of universal goodness that is manifest in people who are kind and compassionate, and who are both thought and action leaders. People of great character who are accomplishing things that evolve the world in which we live. (7) Where have you lived? Why did you move? Well, you asked so here's the list: 1950-1958: Many places from where I was born in Poplar Bluff, MO to Vancouver, BC and across Canada to as far east as the Toronto area; moving in response to my father's job assignments with Bechtel. Finally settling in San Mateo, CA in 1958 where I completed high school and attended the local community college. 1958-1972: San Mateo, CA; moved to join the U.S. Navy. 1972-1973: San Diego, CA; U.S. Navy Basic Training and Hospital Corpsman A-School; Transferred to attend advanced training in Florida. 1973: Pensacola, FL; Hospital Corpsman C-School Aviation Medicine Technician Training; moved when assigned to a permanent duty station. 1973-1976: Naval Station Keflavik, Iceland; moved to Connecticut to join my wife, Janet Donegan, when my 4-year enlistment ended. 1976: Gales Ferry, CT; returned to California to complete college in Industrial and Systems Engineering. 1976-1978: San Leandro, CA; moved to reduce the commute to school. 1978-1982: Foster City, CA; moved to be closer to Janet's home in Castro Valley, and a more convenient commute on BART to work at the Bank of America on Montgomery Street in San Francisco's financial district. 1982-1986: Fremont, CA; I had always wanted to live in The City of San Francisco, so in early November 1986 I moved to the Pacific Heights/Cow Hollow/Marina district area near the Golden Gate Bridge. This area of San Francisco has become our home even though Jane and I now [in 2010] live in Denver, CO. 1986-1993: San Francisco, CA; moved with my girl-friend/companion to La Jolla (San Diego), CA to allow her to take a new job. 1993-1994: La Jolla, CA; moved to accept a job providing consulting services firms and State of California agencies in the Sacramento, CA area. 1994-1997: Roseville, CA; moved to accept job transfer to New England. 1997-1998: Boston, MA; moved back to San Francisco to accept job promotion. 1998-2007: San Francisco, CA; moved to Denver to allow Jane to accept a job promotion. 2007-2010: Denver, CO; moved to Naples, Florida in March 2010. We're enjoying the last season of TV series 'Touch'. We also enjoy watching the TV series, Criminal Minds. (10) Life doesn't always turn out the way you expect. What's been your biggest surprise? My biggest surprise has been to discover that life is forgiving, and that I've been given a chance to live a second life in so many ways. I am delighted to have met Jane LeMay in early July 2004, and that in May 2006 we deepened our commitment to our relationship in marriage. To hear more about Jane and Rich, you really need to call me or send me an e-mail. I'll gladly share the seeming serendipity of our life together. We are blessed.
