Rich's Story

I graduated early in January 66 because of too many years of summer school sessions. Was a loser in high school. Had a whopping 2.1 GPA, because I had straight As in shop classes. Failed everything else. I think I had a reading problem that went undiagnosed. My social outlet was the local De Molay group. Hung out with the Jobs Daughters and Rainbow Girls. Was a Rainbow Beau. Went into the Army and went to flight school. Flew helicopters in Viet Nam in 1968-69 and South America in 70, 71, and 72. Stationed in Panama, but spent most of my time in Honduras and Salvador assigned to the Organization of American States. Fooled around with the base commanders daughter and ended up in a shot gun wedding (threatened with another immediate tour to Viet Nam). In 1972 I left active duty and came home to Berkeley and got divorced. No kids then, except me. Spent a few years in Berkeley as a baby killer and other names that Berkeley folks used to call veterans and worked in my dads office downtown. Finally had enough and was headed north to Alaska to become a hermit and pan gold when my car broke down in Seattle. Stayed for way too long (several years) with a buddy from Viet Nam. I became part of their family and became god father to his son a couple of years later. He had married a flight attendant and convinced me I should date one so we could fly all over together. I ended up married to one and he and I never did fly any where together. I spent several years selling yachting equipment and then boats in Seattle. Had a daughter in 1979 and then a bout with cancer in 1980. Spent almost 6 months on chemo and finally got to down to being a literal 98 ...Expand for more
pound weakling when I quit the chemo and told the doctors that that was not LIVING. At that time I was general manager of an air sea rescue equipment manufacturing plant. I had my throw up bowl under my desk. Corporate wanted to put me in charge of West Coast sales and I resigned. I would have never seen my family. I started back to school and got a associate degree. In 82 I moved the family to Bellingham Washington so I could attend Western Washington University. In 83 I had and affair with my tutor and got divorced. Graduated in 84. Got a job that September in Gig Harbor, WA. Married the other woman in December. She left me with a house and tons of debt in about 3 months. Married a teacher, who I have been married to since, in 1987. Got a masters degree along the way and taught until 2000. Had another bout with cancer in back in 1990. I think it was all the Agent Orange from Viet Nam. In 2000 went to work for my old superintendant at a new educational internet company. I was going to make a million. Ha ha! I am still waiting. The dot com businesses went bust and it has been downhill since. My stock options became less than worthless. I complain, but I never leave because I might have to get a real job and I might really have to work! I enjoy playing on the internet all day. We have a small house and large Koi pond for the fish. 3 large Maine Coon cats wander the house. We have visited Japan about once or twice a year for the past 10 years. Lisa is looking for fish and I am looking for car parts. I restore cars for fun. Dads 1930 Model A Ford was my first major project. I am currently working on a 1968 Toyota Sports 800 sports car.
