Richard (FKA: Dick)'s Story

Life Just-a-guy Workplace OVERVIEW Began my career with Dun & Bradstreet (D&B) on Tuesday, September 17, 1968 in Los Angeles, California as a Business Analyst Trainee. Registered with the Bureau of Private Investigators and Adjusters. Circa January 1971, transferred to Milwaukee, Wisconsin as a Business Analyst. Circa May 1971, promoted to Service Supervisor, Operations Division, Milwaukee District Office, responsible for three work centers: 1. MANIFOLD (Typing) DEPARTMENT. 2. BUSINESS DATA BANK. 3. MADISON, WISCONSIN BRANCH OFFICE. 1. MANIFOLD (Typing) DEPARTMENT. Eight people. This Department was responsible for typing D&B Business Information Reports (BIRS) and other kinds of D&B reports from the notes of the Business Analysts/Reporters who authored and updated them. Masters were sent to the Duplicating Department where copies were made and distributed to inquiring D&B subscribers. Extra copies were filed in custom-built, Tan Value 1 (TV1) Steelcase 5-drawer vertical file cabinets for future distribution to other D&B subscribers. 2. BUSINESS DATA BANK. Three people. This Department was responsible for manually extracting fundamental business information (ex. D-U-N-S Number, business name, address, telephone number, # employees, etc.) from D&B Business Information Reports (BIRS) and other kinds of D&B reports and printing this information, by hand, on a Turn Around Document (TAD) for each separate business location; mailing the TADs to the D&B office in Bethlehem, PA to be keypunched; receiving mail confirmation that the hand-printed information on each TAD was keypunched and stored in D&B's Advanced Office System (AOS) d...Expand for more
atabase and available for electronic retrieval. Historically, D&B's Advanced Office System (AOS), circa 1970, was D&B's first transition to a centralized electronic database which facilitated electronic information retrieval from remote locations vs. physical information retrieval of US D&B Business Information Reports (BIRS) and other kinds of US D&B reports from file cabinets in approximately 80 separate D&B offices throughout the United States. Each separate US D&B reporting office was responsible for reporting on businesses in its designated geographical reporting area. Prior to full implementation of AOS, that ultimately allowed remote electronic information retrieval, each D&B Subscriber/Customer inquiry on a business was fulfilled from the D&B office where its D&B Business Information Reports (BIRS) and other kinds of US D&B reports were stored in file cabinets. 3. MADISON, WISCONSIN BRANCH OFFICE. Two people. One salesperson and one administrative person. Circa November 1971, promoted to Account Executive, Marketing Services Division (MSD). Circa January 1972, transferred to Green Bay, Wisconsin. Mid-1974, transferred back to Milwaukee. Promoted to Senior Account Executive, Marketing Services Division. December 1977, transferred to Atlanta, Georgia. Promoted to Account Manager, Dun's Marketing Services (DMS). Promoted to National Account Executive, Dun's Marketing Services (DMS). Promoted to Principal Consultant, Sales & Marketing Solutions (S&MS). September 17, 2003 marked my 35-year service anniversary with Dun & Bradstreet (D&B). September 1, 2004 retired from Dun & Bradstreet (D&B) after 35 years and 11 months.
