Richard's Story
I was quite the nomadic guy. I lived near Wayne State U, then Mt. Clemens. Today, people would say that I was homeless. I was a bit lost and did many things I was not proud of doing. I was sorry for hurting so many people. I carried that hurt and my own far too long. Back then, I was not ready to own it.
My older bro Gary, was attending MSU and he invited me to live with him in East Lansing. I left behind some bad habits, so for about a year, I was searching for myself, I guess. My brother has been a great friend, too. We became vegetarians, did yoga and I found Tai Chi Schuan a soft martial arts. Gary became interested in other things and left yoga and vegetarianism. I still do yoga, only now I use Wii Fit Plus to guide me. My first marriage lasted 2 years. In that time, I got my GED.
In 1980, I did the est training in Detroit. I got myself and my life back. I know most people think est was useless. I learned that there was one person who was always there when things went wrong and that was me. I was not my history. I had a history and I could make better choices. I took responsibility for my life then. Before that, I believed that life happened to me and I was a victim. I am no perfect person and I can choose in the moment, a new possibility, instead of looking for pain. I forget that often and am still working on me, instead of others mostly.
I had been talking about moving to California, for a long time. Gary lived in LA by then, but I ended up in San Diego. I was homeless again soon after. Some friends gave me a home with them, if I got a job. I did and to this day I am grateful. My second marriage lasted about 3 years.
I moved back to Lansing after the divorce. I joined AA and ACA and have not had a drink or drugs since. I went to LCC taking courses leading to CMU and a BS in education. Shocked? Yep, I know...No one could predict me becoming a teacher, but I loved learning! My GPA was 3.44

d our 12th anniversary this year. I taught in a public school and as a Montessori teacher. I taught three curriculums in the same room, 1st, 2nd and 3rd grades.
I am a poet, an artist in many medias, I write books (none published), I am computer literate and I am a grandpa. A step-grandpa really. Allison, my grand daughter, lives here and Christoper, my grand son, lives in MI.
Looking back, I see that I had problems with attachment. Some therapy has helped me. I'm not the outsider any more. I like the me that I have become. Another big huge piece of inner peace came when I finally forgave myself and others.
I just realized that this is my 9th step, making ammends as best I can. It never occurred to me when I had done my original 9th step in my ACA program. It's funny, but some how the folks that I knew through Goodale Elementary have been on my mind and I have many strong memories from my childhood with them. Denby was more tenuous. I was there, but never graduated.
I traveled across Canada on Highway 1, from Ontario to Vancover. Along the way, I sold my artwork at "Art in the Parks." After leaving Canada, I traveled across America. I was hungry at times, but I will never forget all of the beautiful places and friendly people that I met.
I have worked on the behalf of homeless people as a counselor in tenant/landlord issues involving back rent and first month's rent emergency situations. Even today, I do what I can to help homeless people get back on their feet in smaller ways. It is to thank those who helped me when I was homeless. It is also a commitment I have to altruistic kindness. If you have seen the movie, "Pay It Forward," then you will get it better.
I google earthed Goodale and my old address. My house is gone. Throughout my later years, I had dreams where I flew over that whole area.
With all of that off of my chest, in my life today, I am at peace and wish that for you too. Old friends, I miss you, let's get back in touch.
