Richard's Story

I am currently retired and living with my wife, Joan, in The Villages, Florida. My life and career have taken many different avenues since high school. After a hitch in the Navy, I went on to get a BA in Pre-Med at UMass and went to work for Pfizer’s John L. Smith Memorial for Cancer Research in New Jersey 1965. I then enrolled and received a MS on Animal Pathology at UConn in 1970. While there I entered the political arena by being elected to the Willimantic city council for two terms and became active in Connecticut state political scene. I went on to perfect my managerial skills as an administrator of the Futures Group and an Executive Director of a medium size Bridgeport law firm. I began a law firm consulting practice which I transferred to Washington, DC in 1991. In 2000, I was accepted into an immersion program at George Mason University for a Master’s degree in Education, specializing in designing virtual learning environments. Upon graduation, I was recruited by and went to work for a series of defense contractors to develop virtual learning systems for the Defense Intelligence Agency and the U.S. Joint Forces Command. I retired as a Mission System Integration Engineer from Lockheed Martin in 2010. While living in Washington, DC area, I served for several years as treasurer for the Friends Assisting the National Symphony and s...Expand for more

While retired and living in Williamsburg, VA, Joan and I established the Colonial Heritage Community Foundation to provide respite programs, support groups and educational programs for caregivers and their loved ones with Alzheimer’s Disease and dementia, whose programs are continuing today. Both Joan and I are Certified Dementia Practitioners. Moving to The Villages in 2016, we continued our work there by establishing Our Moment Café, a memory café to promote a social environment for caregivers and those they care for with early stage Alzheimer’s Disease and dementia. The cafés are entering their fifth year and became a Florida non-profit 501 (c) (3) corporation with a board of directors in 2022. The café program is showcased in our website (ourmomentcafe.org). While living in The Villages, Joan and I became Reiki Masters in healing arts in 2019. In addition, I continued my interest in photography that was developed in the mid-60s in both wildlife and landscape photography. Recently I have showcased my water drop collision photography on my Facebook page. I wish all my fellow alumni the best in their life and hope to reconnect with them.
