Richard's Story
Having emigrated from the UK to Canada at the age of 3, my family first settled in North Bay Ontarion,, where my father was employed by International Harvester. After a short time there, he was transferred to Saint John, and we moved to Lancaster (as it then was), to 98 Central Avenue, Quinton Heights. From here I went to Barnhill Memorial School. My older sister, Adrienne, also attended.. In 1960 we moved from Quinton Heights to Oak Terrace in Greendale Sub-Division,and just afterwards we returned to the UK for a visit to see grandparents, aunts and uncles, etc. During that visit my father was offered a job, so we returned to New Brunswick, sold the house and travelled back on the Empress of England from Montreal to Liverpool. I did not actually complete my time at Barnhill, and left early. We lived in the UK's premier holiday resort town, Bournemouth, (almost in the middle of the south coast of England), where I went to school and university. ...Expand for more
I got married there in 1975, and my son and my daughter were born there. (1978 and 1980 respectively).
When I had finished my education, at the age of 22,, I returned to Saint John for a couple of weeks in 1972, to look for a job in Canada.. After an interview in Monkton with CN Hotels, I took up a post at the Macdonald Hotel in Edmonton, where I stayed for a year. Then, homesickness took hold and I returned to the UK and went into the family businesses.
Six years ago, we moved to France. Taking early retirement, we sold up in England and headed off in search of sun and a better quality of life. We are now living just outside Toulouse, France's 4th largest city. Our son remains in London where he has an apartment right in the middle of the city, about 10 mins walk from Trafalgar Square, and our daughter joined us in France. Three years ago she married a young Frenchman, and they now live about an hour's drive away in the cathedral city of Albi..
