Richard's Story

Hello all classmates . I posted a few pics of myself and my wife . Been married 42 yrs. I have so many memories of Madison high . You see my fam and I moved into the hood in 1961 . On the corner of Bakewell street and Mt Abernathy ave. So we always went over there to play baseball and such throughout the years. The school was built in 1962 . My brothers had friends that graduated in ‘62 . My older bro Robert grad in 67 and my other bro Bill grad in 69 . I would have been a 71 grad but I was put behind in the 2nd grade all because my sis couldn’t recite the alphabet so I guess they didn’t want to hurt her feelings You know how that goes . I remember walking home from Sequoia Elementary and I saw that I had to do 2nd grade over . At Madison way back when do you know that there were at least 4 vending machines near the cafeteria . It had apples , oranges , bananas , and even those 6oz bottles of Coca Cola . The apples were so good . Ice cold and delicious . Eventually the vandals took over them in the late 60’s then they disappeared . On the way to school I’d meet up with Jeff West , Dennis Troxell , Rick Budde , Greg Bergstom. Do you remember them? My twin sister Carol dropped out about half way through her senior year to this day I’ll never know why she did that. She passed away 5 1/2 yrs ago from cancer . I’m surprised that only a few of us are accounted for . We did have 1100 classmates . Maybe most have passed away now . Do you remember Alice Zuelke , Laura Chappell , Terri Nicks , David Flower, Perry Schold . Victoria Westfall , Marie Comer, Julie D’Adamo, Bill Acomb , Bob Calligan , . Sometime back in the day the Then unknown actor Mark Hamil of Star Wars fame used to live around the corner on Cannington . He didn’t go to Madison but he went to HaleJr High . He was ahead of me since he was a few yrs older. I just may have hung around with him and my bros but don’t remember. They honored him renaming the street after him recently. Wow so neat. I went to Hale from 65 to 68 . I was a student telephone operator using an old vintage switch board . Do you remember Mr Channel the principal . I had to always have hand me downs since I have 2 two older brothers . I used to wear my older bros ugly grey gym shorts . He was in track and cross country in jr high through college . So in his ninth grade he got a letter in track so they would emboss or stencil a He Man sort of figure in white on the gym shorts . When I wore them after he went to Madison. The kids thought I was a fast runner . Not . At Madison You see I had a Mr Baer for US History I had to take it over . Me and this other kid were the only seniors in the class them being all Sophomores . One day mr Baer asked us if any of us had a drivers license yet s so me and other senior raised our hands . During that time . I never thought about having a reunion 50 yrs later. And here it is . Do you all remember the driver Ed course they built? I hated my senior year . I was 19 when I graduated . I already had to register for the draft and I voted for Nixon in my junior yr. I remember going to school on Monday mornings and there was this big tree on campus covered in toilet paper . I guess the Warhawks lost another game maybe or ?When their was a victory you all would go to that pizza restaurant just north of the school I don’t remember the name . I don’t know if it’s still there. I have driven around my old hood in years. I could go on and on . I’d love to go to the reunion but I’d like better to be on the weekend . I’m a nut for street tacos though . I hope you all are doing ok . You know I used to be 5’10” tall now I’m 5’7 1/2 “ . Hey let’s hear about your memories and experiences . I’m certainly going to add to this from time to time . I was a ceramic engineer before I was forced to retire from Coors before I barely turned 62 ...Expand for more
back in 2014 . I have 3 wonderful grandkids . The oldest is Lucas he is 8 . I don’t see him much . My son and daughter in law live in Maryland . My 41 yr old son is a Commander in the Navy . My daughter is working at Mission San Luis Rey here in Oceanside in the retreat center . Her two daughters are Sofia 4 and Olivia 6 months old . She used to work at the Hotel Dell in Coronado in Hospitality. Both my kids were in marching band . I remember my daughter had a competition somewhere and Madison High was there. My daughters high school El Camino in Oceanside had a good 200 students in the band while Madison had only less than 50 . This was in 2004 . I imagin the enrollment has dwindled throughout the yrs . It’s so weird . You have a large fam so all your bros and sis catch up to you and finish their schooling . You, they get married , join the service , move away and maybe pass away even your own parents then there is nothing left . Now it may take another eon to start in a neighborhood to replace those that been there yrs ago . That’s what happened to Clairemont . I used to live in south Clairemont and would had gone to Clairemont High if we hadn’t have moved to north Clairemont in 61. It’s absolutely dead there nothing but us old folks live there now . Do you remember the Quad on Claremont Drive and Tecaloti Rd. And the old DeFalcos grocery store. The bowling alley . My older sister had her prom there in 58 . She went to MissionBay High School. I was 5 yrs old I remember it so well when she drove there in our old 57 Ford wagon . I remember we had a big enrollment in our sophomore yr . My 10 grade gym class had seniors in it that would had graduated in 1970. Do you remember this kid named David Westerfield who years later murdered and abducted this young girl in Sabre Springs area of Mira Mesa . So scary that maybe I talked to him and would never know he was a bad person . Gosh I have so many memories . . I’ll be 70 next yr . I sure hope that those of you who are participating in the reunion can share your memories and what not . Tell us about your teachers . Your activities and memories of your child hood . I have so much to say . I’m glad I have the opportunity to tell you all about my childhood and memories living in Claremont. Hey let’s all here from you . Don’t be shy . Wow those were the days my friend. Oh I have loads of music I listen to on my phone . Speaking of music . Back in 1958 when I was 5 and living in the middle of the block on Tomahawk Lane down the street from Marston Jr High in south Clairemont my 18 yr old sister Dottie would drag me into her room and we would dance the Stroll and also doing that crazy Willy and The Hand Jive and the Jitterbug . How many of you remember that . Oh many years ago I don’t know when they removed them but occasionally you would hear the Air Raid sirens sounding off. I remember seeing one on mt Abernathy down the road apiece. Then they built a Mortuary nearby nearly 55 yrs ago . It’s crazy to think that both my parents would be there my mom in 07 and my dad in 2010 . We have or I should say I have 14 nieces and nephews and 3 grandkids . Four wild and crazy Pugs . They are a lot of work but they love me as much as I love them . Let’s here from you all ok . Open up and let us hear about your memories you had in you lives . I have my 71 and 72 yearbooks and my Diploma. When I get the chance I’ll let you know what things my fellow classmates wrote .I don’t know why I didn’t get one in the 10th I’m sure it’s as great as what I have said and even more . Want to also remember the ones that have passed away . Oh how terrible isn’t it. May God bless them and bless you all too. I hope you all are in good health as I also am . I surely miss the old days . Don’t you?! C’you soon . I hope you all enjoyed my talk . Let’s hear from you too . Bye Blessing
