Richard's Story
Life
During my last few years of college, I was married for six years, divorced in 1976, then my husband and I met in 1979 and we've been together ever since! On August 31, 2014, on the occasion of our 35th anniversary, We were married in California (since Nevada didn't recognize us at that time).
I worked with the Easter Seals Society in Long Beach for 6 years, followed by 25 years with the California Division of the American Cancer Society. After taking an "early retirement" from the grind of being an Executive, I was General Manager for two years with Miss Scarlett's Specialty Foods, a gourmet food company owned by friends. When a chance came to sell our home in San Francisco, my husband and I decided not to reinvest into the inflated housing market in the Bay Area and settled in Sparks, NV, just outside Reno.
As a retiree, I enjoy volunteering, researching my family's genealogy, working on our home, and traveling.
In January of 2007, I rejoined the work force part-time as Office Coordinator for the First United Methodist Church of Reno where I had become a member. In January of 2008, I "re-retired" and became more active than ever. I founded a food distribution program for those in need in downtown Reno, became a member and President of the Board of Trustees for my church and in March of 2008 I took a team of 21 people to help with the hurricane r...Expand for more
ecovery effort in New Orleans. In March of 2009 I took a larger team of 26 to continue the work.
In July of 2009 I re-entered the work force (again) part time with Harry and David as they opened an outlet in Sparks, NV. Life continues to be very interesting! After one year plus, decided it was time to get back to retirement and continue to enjoy travel, etc. As my husband says, "I've retired once and quit 3 jobs!".
I now continue to work on genealogy, have volunteered for the Community Foundation of Western Nevada, the Food Bank of Northern Nevada and the Northern Nevada Literacy Council, travel and enjoy spending time with friends. In January of 2016, we started living and traveling in Europe for a year to see how the rest of the world lives. After our year of traveling/living in Europe, we returned to the States and drove from the East Coast to the West Coast, visiting family, friends, National Parks, etc. along the way. After 5 more months in Europe during the summer and fall, we finally returned to the States. As of March, 2018, we sold our home in Sparks, NV and have settled into our new home in Birch Bay, WA, about two hours north of Seattle and just a few miles south of the Canadian Border. I now volunteer for the Garden Street United Methodist Church (Finance Secretary), Bellingham Food Bank and the Blaine Senior Center. Our adventures continue!!
