Richard's Story
Life
Soooo many years have passed. After High School I joined the seminary to become an Edmundite Priest. I finished a year of Novitiate and one year of college before deciding to go it alone, outside the protection of the Church. In 1968 I graduated from St. Michael's College and was immediately drafted into the Marine Corps where I luckily remained stateside in North Carolina as a photographer during the Viet Nam War. After discharge in 1970, I attended Catholic University in Washington DC for a short time, then went to San Francisco in 1972 where I attended cosmetology school with the GI Bill and became a hair stylist. In 1974 I moved to Los Angeles where I worked as a stylist in Beverly Hills by day and attended film classes by night. Eventually, I surrendered to the economic realities and focused on my work for 17 years before going back to school once again, this time for a Master's Degree in Psychology, and subsequent to that, for a license to practice psychotherapy in California which I received in 2000. I'm single, gay, nearly retired, and incredulous of the time that has passed....Expand for more
There is much I hope yet to accomplish in my new chosen profession. Since 2003 I've been living primarily in Palm Springs and travelling to Los Angeles weekly for work.
College
Going to school was always one of my favorite things. It became a way of life for me in me early adulthood. Always learning, always ready to try something new, never quite able to grasp the life I wanted. After serving in the Marine Corps, I joined the graduate program in Theatre at Catholic University, but just for one semester. It didn't stick. And although the GI Bill was picking up the tab, I was floundering a bit. When I moved to San Francisco, I took some film classes at San Francisco State. Then after finishing "Beauty School," (GI bill picked up the tab for that), I moved to Los Angeles where I began another graduate program, this time in film editing. Never quite finished that..... Not until 1993 was I able to put a Master's Degree securely under my belt, this time in psychology. Guess I wanted to know more about how screwed up I was. Now I help others to 'unscrew" their lives. Quite satisfying.
