Richard's Story

After HS I attended UT Austin for a couple years then joined the Navy. I studied electronics (ET) and then nuclear power as a reactor operator (California and Idaho) then wass assigned to the submarine MG Vallejo out of Guam (home base was at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii). For my 5th and last year in the Navy I was staioned to a small ship repair facility in DaNang, Viet Nam and for 3 months on a river patrol boat support base floating in the river that ran to the sea from Hue. Upon returning to Austin I joined Texas Instruments where I worked first as a technician and eventually worked my way up to an engineering position as Senior Member of the Technical Staff. I met my future wife Bettye in Austin and we married in '72 (celebrating 4oth anniversary in 2012). She brought a son Steven and we had a son Michael in '74. We lived first in North Austin then bought our first home in Jollyvile in '75, moving ot a bigger home, still in Jollyvile in '85. We traveled in a pop-up trailer and later a "hard side" small trailer during vacations in great loops to the North (Colorado, etc) and several trips to as far West as California and East to New York. We had great times visiting family around the country, sight seeing, and even doing a little amateur gold panning here and there. Our sons both married and so we became empty nesters. I left TI in '92 and joined a small video conferencing company (Vtel) in Austin where I designed video pre and post processing boards until '96. At that time I was recruited by Intel and we moved to Washington state, living South of Olympia for the next 14+ years until I retired in late '10, and we retu...Expand for more
rned to Texas to be closer to our sons and their families. While living in Wa. we hosted a series of five international exchange HS students who I now claim as or expanded family. We have been fortunate to visit with many of them in their home countries of Germany (2), South Korea (1), and Slovenia (1) but have not made it to China yet (1). We stay in contact via Facebook, email, and Skype. While they were with us we brought all of them to Austin during Christmas holidays and also made spring break driving trips from Wa. to central California. Lots of great memories made along the way. We now live n retirement at the Northern edge of Pflugerville where I "torture" a collection of musical instruments (Guitar, mandolin, dulcimer, trombone, trumpet, harmonicas, piano) that I am determined to teach myself to play, at least a little. Our sons live in San Antonio and South Austin. Between our two sons we have 4 grandaughters and 3 grandsons plus 1 great-grandaughter, plus another grandchild (?) due in November and another great-grandchild (?) due in December. So far none of our exchange students have children but one each of the boys and girls are married (we attended the Slovenian girls wedding in Slovenia in '09). Our Chinese son and Slovenian daughter and their spouses visited us late last year and we expect others to come to Texas in the future. I'd love to make a trip to Singapore (our first exchange student from China is a professor in a new university there) and will return to Europe again at some point (we have been there twice already). Would love to hear from old classmates... What has been happening in your worlds?
