Richard's Story

Life Spent over ten years in the Navy and then went to work for the Navy as a Civil Servant. Retired in 1998 after a total of 36 years of government service. Was employed by CACI Technologies in San Diego for 2 1/2 years before accepting a transfer to Newport News, VA. Left CACI in Oct 2004 and went to work for Lockheed Martin at the Hampton, VA office in Jan 2005. Have been married to my wife, Anne, since 1965. We have three sons, three grandsons and two granddaughters. Workplace Following graduation from high school I immediately joined the Navy and served a little more than 3 years. I then worked for General Motors (Ternstedt Div) in Trenton, NJ for 3 yrs and during a layoff managed a service station. I rejoined the Navy in 1966, staying until 1973 where I learned computer programming. I worked as a civil servant for the Navy for the next 26 yrs retiring as the Deputy for Operations in Sept 1998. I immediately joined Questech San Diego which was then bought by CACI. In 2001 I accepted a CACI position in Newport News, VA. I left CACI in Oct 2004 and enjoyed a brief retirement before joining the Hampton, VA. office of Lockheed Martin. After boot camp I attended Radarman "A" School, at the Training Annex in Norfolk, VA between the Armed Forces Staff College and the CINCLANT compound. - December 1960 Graduated from "A" School and reported aboard USS Galveston (CLG3) (Cruiser Light Guided Missile) in Norfolk, VA. - 1962 Galveston sailed from Norfolk to a new homeport in San Diego, CA via the Panama Canal. - Sept 1963 I was separated from active duty as an RD3 (E4) and returned to Trenton, NJ. - I served in the Navy Reserve assigned to Naval Air Station, Lakehurst, NJ before returning to active duty in Aug 1966. - October 1966 I reported aboard USS Kitty Hawk (CVA63) in San Diego, CA. Shortly after reporting we were deployed to the Tonkin Gulf off the coast of Vietnam. During this first of my four cruises to Vietnam I served a brief tour of temporary duty at Monkey Mountain, Danang, South Vietnam. - May 1967 I was promoted to RD2 (E5) and really began my career as a computer programmer/analyst working on the Naval Tactical Data System (NTDS). - Late 1969 while the Kitty Hawk was in the yards I was TAD to the Fleet Computer Programming Center for 6 months. - June 1970 I was promoted to RD1 (E6). - July 1971 I reported for duty at Fleet Air Control and Surveillance Facility (FACSFAC) San Diego, CA. - May 1973 Discharged from active duty.
