Richard's Story

Life HI This is an attempt on my part to explain who/what I am in one long rambling, run-on sentence. In an attempt to “describe” me, I will first of all list all the job titles I have had in my life. Starting as a Paperboy, Jack of all Trades, Laboratory Assistant, College Student, Welder, Punch Press Operator, USN-Submariner-Reactor Operator, Electronic’s Technician, Instrumentation & Control Specialist, Assistant Training Supervisor, Nuclear Engineer (instructor), Inspector (USNRC, INPO [Institute of Nuclear Power Operations]), Consultant, Travel Agency Owner, and last but not least Owner Operator (Truck Driver). Some of those jobs had bigger titles that the job had responsibilities ... like the Lab Assistant. That was back when I was in CHS. It had to do with maintaining the lab rats. I fed, cleaned (took their shit away), and disposed of (killed and incinerated) them. At the time (1960), it was a “black man’s” job. But for me, it was great money. The bulk of my life was spent in the Nuclear Energy field. The USN trained me, and I parlayed that training into a decent career. On around 1990, I got an ulcer. Decided that there was more to life that being in a state of constant competition, so I kinda “threw in the societal towel”, quit the Nuclear Industry and operated a Travel Agency that I started up. Lot’s of fun, but no money. Sold it in ...Expand for more
1997, just after Delta Airlines decided not to pay commissions anymore. I didn’t want to go back to school, didn’t want to start another business etc etc, so I, on a wild hair, decided to drive truck. I Drove for a couple of companies, and then bought a truck, and leased onto “Stage Call Corporation” to haul theatrical productions around the country. These ranged from “rock and roll” (major proportion) to “real theater” (Phantom of the Opera) to religious productions etc. I had a blast. I grew the long hair during this period to “fit” in. The “uniform” for a “rock ‘n roller” is not a set of dress jeans, button down collar, and short hair :) I met a girl at Bethel College and Seminary. We got married, had one kid, lived together for 33 years, and got divorced. We evolved from those two young lovers into two mutually exclusive personalities. It was an “amicable” divorce. My son is a very successful Computer Engineer, currently working for the CDC in Atlanta, but attending Emory Law this fall. He is 29, getting married (he’s in a relationship, and is pussy-whipped, ... he just has those glazed-over eyes when he talks about her ...:) I plan to meander through the Caribbean on my sailboat. I desire to dive, fish, explore, and also to do nothing. There are so many peoples and places to see in the Caribbean that I don’t think I will get bored.
