Dick's Story
Life
After graduation, I entered the Army as an Operating Room Specialist. While in training at Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, TX, I met my bride of 33 years, Ana Lourdes Rivera-Espino. We had our two daughters, Jennifer and Natalie, while stationed at Fort Carson, Colorado Springs, CO. Our next 4 years was spent in Landstuhl, Germany at the 2nd General Hospital. I was itching for the "real" life after 7 years of military duty, so I decided to get out in 1979 and headed back to Michigan and back to school. I graduated from the University of Michigan - Flint in 1983 with a BS in Computer Science. As fate would have it, I found myself longing for the military life again, so I landed a commission in the Navy as a Cryptologic Officer. Lourdes and I packed up the kids and moved to Rota, Spain where we lived for 3 years. While there, we got to see most of Europe. srael. After the European tour, we made our way back to the states where I reported to USS FIFE (DD-991), homeported in San Diego, CA. FIFE shifted homeports in 1988 to Yokosuka, Japan, where I spent the next year by myself on the ship. Lourdes, the girls, and I were reunited in 1989 when I attended the Navy Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA. What a beautiful place! I got my Master's Degree in Computer Science - Software Engineering on the Navy's dime and finished out my Navy career in Florida -> Virginia -> Florida. Lourdes and I are now living in McKinney, TX. I'm a software engineer for Texas Instruments and Lourdes serves as a nanny to my granddaughter, Solenne Analise Benoit (Lisi, for short). Natalie is a McKinney police officer. She lives nearby and works screwy shifts so we look after Lisi much of the time. Jennifer graduated with a business degree at Virginia Wesleyan College and refuses to move from Virginia Beach.
