Rick's Story

I am one of the rare natives of Pasdena and Altadena. Though born in Pasadena, my parents and I moved to Altadena when I was 6yrs old. I graduated from Sacred Heart grammar school in 1961, after which I attended Don Bosco Tech HS. After graduating from there I attended Pasadena City College, and then moved on to Cal-State LA. While at Cal-State LA, I lost my student deferment and got a draft notice. Instead of going into the Army or Marines, I enlisted into the Air Force. I served in the Air Force for 24 years and retired from the Pentagon in 1994. Though I worked in the weather field at the start of my military career, I spent most of the time in the computer field. After retiring, I became a "hands on geek". My career after the Air Force varied from doing IT Customer Support (help desk), to network engineering and design, to management. Currently, I work for the Apollo Group in Phoenix as a Network Administrator and am loving it. Regarding my family, my wife Barbara is a Physical Therapist who grew up in West LA. She and I met at Cal-State LA. We married in May 1971, shortly after I joined the Air Force. We have a wonderful Son, Aaron, 33, who recently married a fantastic lady named Kortni from the O'Grodnick family in Chantilly, Virginia. Maybe a grand child will come along....who knows? I love to relax by working in my hobbies: photography, cooking, model trains, model airplanes, woodworking, playing and listening to music, and watching good movies. Also, I love going to the beach and just relaxing and watching people while sitting on the sand. I also like to go on long drives and take in the ...Expand for more
scenery through mountains or up the California coast. When I lived in the Washington DC area, I loved going to the eastern shore down to Chintogeague, especially during pony pinning time. I also love to relax by going fishing, and occasionally, camping. I've gone hunting in the high country of Colorado, but my gun sights have never seen an animal. Will I do that again? Maybe. Who knows. I did enjoy the outdoors, though. For exercise, I like to play golf, play tennis, ride my bike, go for walks, and work out at the gym. When I was in high school, I'd hang out with the guys and go body surfing at Huntington Beach. My first job was at Caltech, where I got paid good money to build parts for mini computers and special circuits designed by the students. What I remember most about it is the Astro Electronics Lab where I worked. That was part of the Astronomy Dept. In that job, I was part of the crew who did the wiring for the Solar Telescope on the lake at Big Bear. Also, I had to deliver some equipment to Mt Palomar observatory one full-moonlit night. When I went down there, the scientist who greeted me and my girlfriend at the time (she's now my wife), gave us a personal tour of the observatory. I will never forget about that experience. I will never forget the times I spent with my parents. With my mom, I went on long drives. With my dad, I leaarned how do fix house wiring and other DIY stuff. I have many fond memories of our time together designing and building a Lionel train layout and then running the trains. Both of my parents are gone now, but they will always remain in my heart. I miss them dearly.
