Richard's Story
Life
New News: The trip to England went well. Took British Midland to Manchester, and rented a car from Avis at the airport. Haven't driven on the wrong side of the road in 25 years, but it all came back quickly. The Peugot 207 would not be my first pick for a car, but at six bucks a gallon for gas, the little car averaging 45 MPG was great. Went out to Portmadog Wales, there are a couple of small steam railways, and the village that the TV show The Prisoner was filmed in.
Then down the coast to Taylin and another narrow gauge railroad. Went on to Cardiff to a great outdoor museum, then a mad dash up to southern Scotland, and Edinbrough. Didn't really have the time for Scotland we should have, so that's another trip. Of course you can't go to the UK without seeing London so we got back to Manchester and turned the car in a few days early, then caught a train to London. Don't ever take a car into London, traffic is a total pain, and you're charged at 8 pounds per day toll for every day the car is in London, they do this off cameras, and they photo everything.
For those of you who haven't been to the UK, it's worth the time, you don't need to rent a car, the train system will get you everywhere. To those of you that have tipped a pint in a London pub that's older than this country, well I don't have to tell you, and you that haven't, well I can't, you just got to go there.
All right back to the old stuff:
OK so I don't stay in touch well. As most of you reading this might now, after Skyline Grade School, I went on to Lincoln High, for a short and undistinguished effort a education, lets face...Expand for more
it Lincoln and I were just about as compatible, as oil and water. After leaving at the start of my junior year, I held several jobs as a driver until 1976, when for reasons that escape me I joined the Airforce.
Four years later I came to the realization that the discipline of the military wasn't quite right for me, and then Staff Sergent Klaus left government service.
After a trip to England, I went to work for Lockheed Aircraft, at Portland airport, that lasted about eighteen years, toward the end of that time the Portland operation was sold to an insurance company, and I was constantly at odds with the new management. The only real problem was that they were idiots and I pointed out their mistakes.
At the time things became untenable at the airport, I had funds for a down payment of my first Freightliner, and I've never looked back.
Some of you have done better in you're lives and good for you, considering what I had to work with, and looking back seeing that I could have done some things better, I'm still pretty happy with the way things have turned out.
I enjoy what I do for a living, have and great wife ( some of you might remember her as June Thomas ) she was a few years after me at Lincoln, class of 74 if I got that right. And we have two great kids.
The future, well who knows. My brother and I are developing a line of model railroading parts for the hobby, well see what happens with that. And I'm going to start back on a pilots license that was about half complete when the finance pressure of family had to come first.
Get in touch some time, thanks for taking the time to read.
