Richard's Story

I entered the Naval Service out of high school. I spent 4yrs on active duty (serving at Memphis,TN, Rota, Spain, Southeast Asia and San diego, CA and was stationed on 3 ships). After my discharge, I went to Walker College and received my A.S., and then on to the U of Alabama and received my B.S. degree, and some 8 years later I received my degree in Law (J.D.). I joined the Naval Reserves after my first enlistment and contiued to serve my country on the reserve side of the house. I worked in civilian law enforcement from May, 1973 to October, 1984. Working with the Tuscaloosa Police Department (patrolman), and later with the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department. I worked as a patrolman, in the warrant division and for 5 years worked as an Evidence Technician with the sherif's department. In May, 1984, while still in the naval reserves, I received my commission as an officer and was recalled to active duty some six months later. I was one of only a handful of Physical Security/Law Enforcement specialist in the Navy at that time. After being recalled, I was stationed in Subic Bay, R.P., as the Assistant Operations Officer for Law Enforcement/Physical Security. I subsequently received orders and was transferred to the Chief of Naval Education and Training in Pensacola, Florida where I was assigned as the Chief Inspector for the Inspector General's Of...Expand for more
fice, for Law Enforcement/Physical Security and corrections programs. I was later transferred to the USS Nassau in Norfolk, VA, where I was assigned as the Physical Security Officer in charge of the security of the ship for some 2000 Navy and Marines. Next I was transferred to the Great Lakes Naval Base, in Illinois where I assumed the title of Commanding Officer of the U. S. Navy Brig. After that tour, I was then transferred back to Pensacola, Florida where I spent 18 months and retired. After retirement from the military, I went to work for the Department of Defense at the Naval Air Station in Pensacola, FL, during which time, my beautiful wife, Donna, of 37 1/2 years passed away. Donna was a pediactric nurse and in the end that caused her early passing. Donna and I have two daughters (Robbin and Catherine) and 3 grand children (Robert, Rylan and Sarah). They keep me busy. I try to take them to the movies at least once a month and interact with them as much as I can. Other than that, I work around the house in Pensacola and travel back to Alabama to visit friends and relatives in Bibb, Walker and Jefferson counties. Since January 2011, I spend about half of my time each month at Smith Lake. I have a small place on the lake near Duncan Bridge and enjoy visiting old friends and relatives. I attend Boldo Baptist Church when I am in Jasper.
