Richard's Story

During high school, after school, I worked for the Southern California Gas Company as a Meter Mechanic in Pico Rivera. After graduation I attended Rio Hondo College and continued working for the Gas Company; I found myself more interested in making money. As more hours I worked, my grades suffered. I took a leave of absence and lived in Ecuador for a year where I met the most beautiful woman I have ever seen in my whole life (this person would become my wife four years later). I left Ecuador and returned to Whittier, graduating from Rio Hondo College and transferred to Cal Poly Pomona. "The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want"; But I can't let this one young lady get away (my wife to be). I prayed and fasted like a mad man for this gal to be my wife. During this time I was attending college I was writing to my Missy in Ecuador (in Spanish) proposing marriage. I learned to love in prayer and fasting. I was all heart and open to counsel; the Lord was working in my life changing my way of living and the way I see life. The truth is back when I met my wife to be she was not that interested in me, but that was OK. She was newly engaged to be married, but she was not married yet. So this is where a guy would find hope. I was not looking for someone used, a basket case, with luggage, with hurt feelings. I was looking for this fine person, sweet, beautiful, loving and kind, with the love of God in her heart. To make a long story short, after three years of writing her, she writes me back saying she was not interested. And she also asks me why is it that I don't have a girlfriend where I am. I answered honestly and said, "I would not have one here because I would always like to be with her and things may get out of control. I am a college student attempting to study for a career to support a family. I explained to her that having a girlfriend here at church would make it difficult because it would be that I would go to church to see her and not to look for the Lord. And having hope knowing that she is in Ecuador gives me faith that 'He who started a good work in you is faithful to see it to the end'. I sent that letter off thinking it would be the last of her. I prayed and I cried. 45 Days later (snail mail) I...Expand for more
received her letter saying that she misses my letters. I was the happiest man alive. I didn't care about college, she is a once in a life time opportunity. I sold all that I had and left for Ecuador. When I arrived in Ecuador I was crying for joy. When I met my wife to be for the second time it was at the airport, my heart stopped and skipped a couple of beats. I courted her for three months and we were married. Money wise, my wife has been a stay at home mother with all our kids and a fashion designer. And now that all the kids are over 18 and everyone has gone through college, my wife works part-time just to keep her sanity. Now we are trying to cope with the kids leaving the nest. The boys make it easy to leave, but the girls make it hard! Since June of 2008 I have returned to Rio Hondo College and also studied at Los Angeles Trade Technical College and El Camino College trying to find an alternative career for my retirement. My brain shut down in February of 2014 like brain-fog; it was about the same time I really started to have this tremendous pain in my body. My shoulders were hurting along with back and sciatica pain, I could not walk, I was confined to a wheelchair. I have been retired from my job since July 2010 and it doesn't look like I would be looking for another job. There is a decline of activities that I am able to do each year. I was injured at work by repeatedly carrying tools and equipment that was awkward and too heavy. It hurts when I walk. I have both knees worn-out; L-1 through L-5 budging herniated discs causing stenosis; C-1 through C-5 budging herniated discs causing stenosis; left and right shoulder rotator cuff tear. Being a weight lifter in high school and college didn’t really help; you bet I was big with muscles but that didn’t last forever. Working for the Gas Company in the late 70s exposed me to PCBs by disassembling the “5-Light” gas meters with a hot iron and wiping clean the interior oil. All this exposure has been causing severe headaches and an enlarged liver. I have read that it eventually leads to liver damage, dementia (brain fog) and lymphoma. Time will tell how I will end up. I have never smoked, I don’t drink nor do drugs, and I go to church with my wife.
