Richard's Story

Life After my military obligation, Vietnam Vet (1967-1968), I held several positions with Bay Area organizations providing services for returning Veterans. I worked briefly for the State of California in the Employment Development Department and worked for the National Alliance of Business as a Veterans Representative, finding jobs for veterans in the Bay Area. In 1972, I became a training officer with Wells Fargo Bank. In 1973 the Clorox Company recruited me to become its first Equal Employment Opportunity Officer. In 1975, my wife Kathi and I moved to Chicago where I was assigned as an Employee Relations Manager for the Martin Brower Company, a wholly owned subsidiary fo Clorox. In 1978, I transferred the the Household Products Division of Clorox where I became Administrative Plant Manager for a large Bleach plant on Chicago's south side. In early 1979, I moved into the Labor Relations Department where I spent my next 12 years as a Labor Relations Manager, focusing on keeping operations union free, serving as an arbitration advocate and providing labor and employee relations consultation and advice to manufacturing operations, as well as working on design and redesign of people systems in such operations. In 1991, I accepted an assignment as a Human Resource Manager assigned to Headquarters Operations in Oakland and in 1992 moved back into the Household Products group where I provided services to the Marketing , Sales, Accounting , Finance and Manufacturing Staff organizations in the Household Products group. In 1994, I was attracted by an opportunity with the McKesson Corporation. I began as Director, Human Resources for the McKesson Drug Company based in Walnut Creek. In 1996 I moved onto a mergers and acquisition team responisbile for integrating new businesses into McKesson. ...Expand for more
For two years, I commuted between Oakland and Dallas working on that assignment and, at its completion in 1998, I moved into a position as Director, Human Resources and Organization Effectiveness for McKesson's Information Technology Group. I served as part of the Information Technology Leadership Team until May 2006. We were petty successful in transforming IT into a higher performing organization. I went out on a disability for a few months with some back problems and while out, a close friend who worked at McKesson, running its Data Centers, joined Kaiser Permanente and immediately recruited me to join his leadership team as Chief of Staff for Kaiser's Enterprise Operations and Enterprise Engineering Group. We run Kaiser's Data Cetners. It's an exciting and challenging opportunity and is probably the last position before retirement in maybe four years. My Bride of 36 years Kathleen and I still live in Oakland and occasionally run into many of our childhold and early adulthood firends. Our son Richard II graduated from San Diego State with a degree in Fine Arts and is living and working in San Diego. A former work collegue from Clorox recently asked me what I attributed my growth and success to, and I responded that building trusting relationships with people, networking and making lasting connections and impressions have been a key to my success. Importantly, delivering on what I committed to also helped me build a reputation as a person who could get the job done. I have been very fortunate to meet some remarkable people in my career and I try to maintain contact with those with whom I have built lasting relationships with as often as I can. To those who open this bio, I hope that you will send a message to let me know what how your life is going and how you are doing. Rich
