Richard's Story

School Wow, This is somewhat surreal to be reflecting back on life as a teenager 25 years ago. Midwood High School was filled with plenty of good memories along with many of the typical moments of angst that most 15-17 year old boys go through. What I remember most vividly are: (1) the mile-long walk to school down Ave. H and/or Foster Avenue starting at my house on East 7th Street. (2) The long nites rehearsing for "SING". I think our class won several years in a row. (3) Mr. Romer's English Literature class. (4) Mr. Sarney's drama class. (5) Ms. Dubois and the sexy mole on her cheek :) (6) "hanging" out in the Brooklyn College cafeteria. (7) cramming onto the "6" Bus across the street from school at the bus-stop. (8) All the good times associated with my affiliation with the B'nai Brith Organization. (9) Hey Charlie Newman, Jeff Rattiner, Mark Seligman, Amy Horowitz, Donna Lurie, Stephanie, Jay Herzog, Stan Kaye, Alan Reiss, Mike Miller, Wendy Lurie, et al... (hey everyone, I sure hope the years have been kind to you all and you are happy, healthy, prosperous, and forever young........... Saturday Nite Fever, New Years Eve 1975 at Charlie Newman's house (remember that nite Jeff & Rochelle?). Taking the "D" train from Brooklyn to Greenwich Village to play chess with the old men in Washington Square Park and then catch the "Rocky Horror Picture Show" at the Waverly Theatre. Wow, this reminiscing is quite fun. I think it may have been Plato that once said, a life of non-reflection is a life not wort...Expand for more
h living (I probably just trashed what he actually said). Anyway, I'm thinking now that I probably don't relect back as much as I should. This is really enjoyable. (Now I'm wondering if anyone besides myself and my wife will ever read this? It's funny, I now live in Fort Collins, CO (have since 1991). I'm writing this in my hotel room in Sacramento, CA one day after the Big California Recall. I'm about to catch Arnold, the new Governer on Jay Leno. How's that for a "historical perspective". As far as where I've been, I'm now 42 years old with a beautiful wife, Catherine, a beautiful son, Andrew who turns 4 this February. My four grand-parents have all passed on. My father has also passed on. I miss them all terribly. My brother, sister, and mom all live in New York. My mom still lives in the same Bklyn apartment building for 50+ years. I am an Uncle about 17 times over. After Midwood I went to college at (1) SUNY-Stony Brook, (2) New York Ranger School (AAS), (3) CUNY-Kingsborough, (4) SUNY College of Environmental Science & Forestry at Syracuse (BS), (5) West Virginia University (MS), and (6) University of Minnesota. I guess that's a lot of schools. I've been working for the U.S. Forest Service full time since 1986. My first job with the Forest Service was the summer of 1980 in Idaho. I absolutely love being a dad. For me, it's the most incredible part of life to watch your child grow and mature. Each day is full of incredible wonder. I'm about to fall asleep so I'll follow up on this another nite.
