Richard's Story

Life Hello Everyone! I retired from active duty as a Major, US Army in 1996 after 31 years military service. Enjoyed retirement for about a month, then joined the staff of the Office of Admissions, Northern Illinois University as a Counselor. Currently, enjoying my second career as a Senior Assistant Director helping students and their families to prepare for college. At present, am very active and involved in the National Association for College Admission Counseling and in the Illinois Association for College Admission Counseling. Previously, lectured as Professor of Military Science at NIU, Rockford College, and at Kishwaukee & Waubonsee Community Colleges in Illinois. This area has a wonderful four season climate, which remains a tremendously refreshing change as I spent a great deal of time in Middle Eastern deserts while in the military. Served in Third US Army, ARCENT, with the Engineer Command during Desert Shield/Desert Storm. After the Gulf War, spent much time on engineering projects in several Middle Eastern nations. Originally, after high school, served during Vietnam War as a Navy Hospital Corpsman, HM3, 1967-1969, as an Operating Room Technician in medical/surgical support of the 1st and 3rd Marine Divisions. After coming home, moved to Salt Lake City, Utah and worked full time at the University of Utah Medical Center and at Holy Cross Hospital while attending the university part time. Graduated from the "U", Magna Cum Laude, and entered the US Army...Expand for more
as a 2nd LT to continue a military career. Spent career assignments in Korea, Europe (especially Germany; Thank you Mr. Harlow, I actually remembered a lot of the German you taught us at OHS. Speaking and reading the language really helped me win a lot of new friends in Germany!), several nations in the Middle East, Egypt, and various posts in CONUS. Held Command twice, also served as an Aide-de-camp, XO, PLDR, Staff Officer, Senior Logistician, Contracting Officer and as a Professor of Military Science. Met and later married my lovely wife Dianne, while on assignment at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana in the 1980s. We met at a reception and retirement ceremony for her aunt, who was the senior civilian transportation officer for the post. We were seated next to each other and discovered mutual interests in books, music, impressionism art, and life. We were married, after a year engagement, at Trinity Episcopal Church, Indianapolis. Di is an insurance professional and an alumna of Indiana University. Our daughter Renee', has graduated from Woodlands Academy of the Sacred Heart and is now away attending college majoring in actuarial science. Currently, we reside near St. Charles, IL, a lovely Mid-western town on the Fox River about 65 miles from Chicago. In quiet moments we enjoy family and friends, good music and art, and continue in traditional Anglican commitment. I have many fond memories of OHS and extend best wishes and warmest regards to all. ---RT, OHS '65
