Richard's Story
Life
After high school, I went to Michigan State University in 1973, first at James Madison College, then switching to Communications. I graduated in 1977 and moved to the San Francisco Bay Area, where I lived and worked as a political activist and journalist for 15 years, met my current wife, and raised three children, all of whom are now grown and out of the nest. In 1993, I decided it was time for a change and the family and I moved to Carbondale, Illinois, near the southern end of the state (kind of like the Beverly Hillbillies in reverse but without oil money being involved), where I went to law school at Southern Illinois University. or Governor of Illinois on the Green Party ticket in 2006, winning over 10 percent of the vote. I ran again in 2010 but did not do as well for a number of reasons (among them, there were 5 people on the ballot that year, including a millionaire who spent millions of dollars of his own money). I have mostly good memories of RHS and MSU and occasionally get nostalgic and curious as to what became of others in our class -- which drew me to this website. I don't have a lot of spare time but I do like corresponding with old classmates occasionally. I'm also on Facebook. The photo is from my 2010 campaign, marching in the St. Patrick's Day Parade in Chicago. There was a cold mist blowing in from Lake Michigan that day so the smile on my face was probably frozen! When I die, I hope to be buried in Chicago, so I can remain politically active . . . .
