Richard's Story

Life After high school, I joined the USAF. I was trained to work in Air Transportation. Loaded and unloaded aircraft. I worked hard in this job for 14 years. I was stationed at Clark AB, Philipines from 1985-1986. Was then stationed at Pope AFB, NC. Travelled on assignment to several different places around the world. Deployed to Panama during Just Cause (Invasion of Panama), and to several places during Desert Shield/Storm. Stayed at Pope from 1986 until I got out of active duty in 1999. Moved to Atlanta, GA and began work with BellSouth which is now AT&T where I am currently employed as a network analyst. I am also an active member of the USAF Reserves. I am assigned at Dobbins ARB where I pull my one weekend a month (plus a few extra days here and there). I could have retired as early as January 2005 but decided to extend to take a promotion to Master Sergeant. I made Master Sergeant and then planned to retire from the Reserves in 2006 but again decided to stay in longer to try to make Senior Master Sergeant. In December 2004, my reserve unit was called up to active duty. I had to leave my family behind in Georgia. I took a team to Pope AFB, NC (yes, back to Pope AFB) for the 1st part of 2005. I then took my team to Kuwait and ran the aerial port at Ali Al Salem AB. I returned to Pope in September and finished my activation in December 2005. I went back to BellSouth and then went back out in April through June 2006. This time, I went to Charleston AFB, SC. I am home now (in my new home we had built when I returned from Kuwait). I made Senior Master Sergeant in August 2007. I got married to my long time girlfriend in 1999. My wife is currently in school full-time and is studying Radiological Technology and she is scheduled to finish in June 2008. I have 2 step-sons, a step-daughter and a son that was born in July 2001. School After graduating from high school, I took some classes at FTI (now FTCC) in Business Computer Programming. Found I was tired with school so I joined the Air Force. While in the Air Force, I learned a trade. Became interested in computers again in 1991 so I went back to FTCC and took more classes. Did not obtain a degree, though (not enough free time then because I kept getting sent on Temporary Duty with the Air Force). I've wanted to finish school for several years but it's been hard to find consistent free time. I am now looking at starting back to school in 2008. Haven't decided what school to attend but I would like to finish in the area I started. Don't get me wrong. I am not angry with myself for not finishing what I started. All the great things I have experienced would not have happened if I finished school right after high school. I know education is important and is important to me for my future. Workplace Joined BellSouth in 1998 after seperating from Active duty Air Force. Working as a network analyst responsible for supporting BellSouth employees/contractors who work from home/remote offices. Work with ISDN and ADSL network topoligies. In December 2004 I accepted a new position as a NOC analyst responsible for supporting real customers (tough work!). The weekend before I reported to my new position I was notified by my reserve unit that...Expand for more
we are being activated. I had to go to work on Monday morning and tell my new boss I will be gone for a year. While he was not happy, he realized how much stress I was under and supported my obligations. Once I returned, I was able to settle down and learn this new job. The job deals with managing customers routers. While we not only support the end customers routers (Cisco), we also support our edge routers (Cisco, Redback and Juniper). Imagine one day working as a paper boy and then jumping to a job running the press with no training. That would be a good analogy of my new job. After my activation, I returned to BellSouth. BellSouth is a great company to work for and now I am faced with an uncertain future since BellSouth and AT&T will merge. All I can do is sit back and watch how it pans out. Military Spent just over 14 years in active duty. Seperated the USAF with a line number for TSgt. I wanted to stay on Active Duty but only if I was able to move down to Dobbins or Robins AFB, GA. My girlfriend lived in Atlanta and she was obligated to stay in Georgia. I thought long and hard about staying in or getting out. I started interviewing for IT jobs in October-November 1998. At first, I didn't see too many opportunities present itself. I went to a job fair in Atlanta in late November and received a call from BellSouth. I interviewed for the job and didn't hear anything back. Another company called me and was interested in interviewing me. I made my descision then. I put in my seperation paperwork around 10 December 1998. I didn't have a job lined up. My boss briefed the commander during the staff meeting and I was told my commander was dumbfounded. Many thought I was crazy for getting out with so many years in and with a line number for TSgt. I wanted to be closer to my girlfriend, I was burned out plus I wanted a career that paid more on the outside. The next day I received a call from BellSouth. They did a phone interview with me and offered me a job paying almost twice as much as I was currently making - how could I refuse! At that point I had about 4 days before terminal leave was supposed to start so I had to hurry!!! Outprocess, seperate and move because BellSouth wanted me to start on 30 December 1998. I didn't throw it all away though. I joined the AF Reserves in 1999 (after terminal leave) so I have no break in service. I hit my 20 years satisfactory service in January 2005! (20 years technically was October 2004 but I had to pull 6 years with the reserves). I was stationed at Pope AFB with the 53rd APS for the first few years in the reserves but moved down to Dobbins ARB in Atlanta, GA before my son was born. I am now with 80th APS. There were a lot of people at Pope that I have known for a long time. I just reenlisted for another 6 years and just made Senior Master Sergeant in August 2007. There is a method to my madness. I am about 900 points short of full retirement. If I can pull enough active duty time and meet all my weekends, I can draw full retirement (7300 points). One day is worth 1 point. If you accumulate 7300 points, that equates to 20 years total. My wife is encouraging me to proceed with this and I am always looking for opportunities to get more points.
