Richard's Story

After graduating from Notre Dame High School, two years of college and a four year stint in the U.S. Air Force, I graduated from Wichita State University Barton School of Business with a BS in Accounting. I received my Masters Degree from Lake Forest Graduate School of Management in Chicago. While in the Air Force, I married Kathleen Szwet, who graduated from St. Francis DeSales High School in 1970. We have three lovely children. Jennifer lives in Twin Lakes, WI with her husband and four grandchildren. Daniel lives in Rome, Italy with his wife and two grandchildren. Annie-Marie lives with her husband in Nederland, CO. In 1977 we relocated from Wichita to Boston, were I worked for Honeywell Electro-Optics Center in Lexington, MA. In 1984, we relocated to the Chicago area where I worked for Recon/Optical, Inc., for 26 years until 2010. In January, 1996 I began an ex-patriate assignment for Recon/Optical as Director of Business Development for Europe and the Middle East based in Rome, Italy, where we lived for nearly nine years. My mom and dad loved Italy, and came to visit often. After a long illness Kathy passed away in 2000 while we were living in Rome, which Kathy loved. In 2001 I met Lori Tibbett. Lori was in her first year of a teaching position at the American Overseas School of Rome, Italy where my youngest daughter was a sophomore in high school, and I was on the board of trustees and Chair. Lori was also widowed and has two children, Brandon and Breidi.. We were married in July, 2003, and together we now have twelve grandchildren. We relocated from Rome back to Chicago in 2004. In 2010 I retired from Recon/Optical as Vice President and General Manager, and consulted for several small companies seeking to grow their business internationally. ocated to Sacramento, CA and I accepted a full-time position as Vice President of Strategy and Development with Innovative Technical Solutions, Inc., one of my clients, headquartered in Honolulu, Hawaii. In January, 2015, Corning, Inc. acquired the company. I worked for Corning for five and a half years as manager of a product line of specialized optical sensors and systems for space, defense, agriculture and food quality and safety applications, I retired on June 30, 2019. As of now - February, 2023 - I still serve as a subject-matter expert and consultant for Corning. It is a great, iconic Upstate NY company that has been in continuous business for 170 years. Since (partially) retiring I am now more active in Rotary International. I am past-president (2021-22) of the Rotary Club of South Sacramento, and chair the Rotary District 5180 Global Grant Scholarship Committee. I am also chair of the board of Greenheart International, headquartered in Chicago, and a member of the Pastoral Council at the Cathedral of Blessed Sacrament in Sacramento. I am a frequent author/contributor to Smerconish.com and TriplePundit newsletter. Lori and I enjoy hiking, bicycling, golfing, kayaking and paddle-boarding. I also love to cook! My brother, Steve and sister, Elaine still live in Utica, as do numerous cousins.. Another sister, Diane lives Westford, MA. I have been truly blessed in life with two loving relationships, three loving children, six grandchildren (Lori and I have 12 grandchildren all together) and a long career that allowed me tremendous diversity, opportunity and brought me to over 55 countries in Europe, Asia, the Middle East, North Africa and South America.
