Rick's Story

Although I moved to California during my senior year and did not graduate from EHS, I have always felt like EHS was/ is my high school. I graduated from the University of California, Irvine in June 1968 with a B.S. in Bilogical Science and a minor in Physical Science (which included math). I had always wanted to be a veterinarian and had worked for one for five years, when during my senior year, in fulfilling another requirement for graduation, I took a course in sociology. As UCI had opened just two years earlier there were no graduate students yet. The professor on the first day of class, asked if any of us wanted to do research for him at an elementary school, instead of having to attend classes, do papers, and take tests. I raised my hand and spent the next six months volunteering at a school three hours a week. Bottom line, I loved it. The principal asked if I would like to teach the next year. I was hired and spent the next forty-one years as an educator (30 as a teacher and 11 as a site administrator), retiring 6/30/08. I ran for the Board of Education, one of five candidates (two incumbants) for two seats. The city unidied our districts in 2012 and I chose to not run again.. I was drafted my first year of teaching. As there was teacher shortage, 500 parents wrote letters to t...Expand for more
he U.S. Congressman for our area. I was drafted, but placed in an Army Reserve Unit. I became a Hospital Administrator and remained in the Reserves for the next 20 years. I met my wife (Nancy), when I was teasing her twin sister (she was wearing an engagement ring)out for a date. She told me she was engaged and I told her that was too bad. She told me she had an identical twin sister. She set it up and two years later, we were married, now 43 years. We have two sons (Chris and Greg - both are Ventura County Sherrifs, two great daughter-in-laws (Briana and Adriana)and seven beautiful gandchildren(Hunter, Wyatt, Reagan and Hayden (born to Greg and Adri) and Chase, Charleigh and Codie (identical twin girls born to Chris and Bri). The best part, is we all live on a small (6 acre) horse ranch (basically, a family compound) in Santa Paula, CA. I stay active volunteering around our area: I am on our MIssions Board and the Deacon Board for our church; I am a Citizen on Patrol for the Santa Clara Valley with the Ventura County Sherrif's Department, doing ride-a-longs, working with Explorer Scouts, etc. The rest of my time is spent reading, baby-sitting, working around the ranch and fly fishing as much as possible. Life couldn't get any better! God has and continues to truly bless our lives.
