Rick's Story

Wow, where have all the year's gone? It doesn't seem that long ago that we were in school. Or maybe it does. We touch so many lives we don't even realize it, wrapped up in our own little worlds which back then seemed so important. We may not have all liked each other, but we were a part of each others lives growing up and little did we realize what a big world it was after life at school, and what a small part of our lives that really would be. Sometimes I wish we could go back in time and re-live some of the good memories that we shared during our younger years in life. Of course, some of them I'd just as soon forget, too, but that is what builds character, I guess. And anyone who remember's me, know's I was quite a character. My life has turned out great. There have been some bumps along the way, but none that I haven't either been able to overcome, or just accept as a part of life. I have a great, we'll maybe I shouldn't say great, but a very good job. I work for Tones Spice Company in Ankeny, the largest spice manufacturing facility in the world. Started there in 1982 as their first Inventory Auditor until 1986. Then spent 2 years as Supervisor over all Receiving and Milling operations. Then in 1988 was promoted to Production Planner/Scheduler over all Retail production lines for about 7 years and since then I have been responsible for all Food Service, Cash N Carry and Industrial production lines. A computer desk job. I have been more successful than I ever dreamed I would be, considering the class clown I was in school. I have a very nice home in Ankeny. Moved here in December of 1994 after Tone's moved here in January of the same year. Tones has a fitness center, which is great! I work out 4-5 times a week. I have been married for 25+ years. This is my second marriage. The first time I was married at 16 1/2 years old. Way too young to be married. I was father of my first son less than 4 months later. Way too young to be a father. Moved to Murfreesboro, Tennessee with my first wife and her family in ...Expand for more
1977. Built fiberglass fishing and ski boats while I lived there. That was quite an experience. The first marraige didn't work out too well, but live and learn. Moved back to Des Moines in 1979. I was never so glad to be back home. I have been a father of two son's and father to three step-sons. I love to travel. I've been North, South, East and West in the US and been to the Bahama's 3 times. I'd like to make it to the Northeast yet, to Vermont and Maine, and West to Southern California. Next year I'm hoping to go to Oahu, Hawaii where my Aunt and a couple of my cousins have lived since the early '70's. I'm finally just asking myself, "Why haven't I been there yet?" I go to Estes Park, Colorado every year at the end of June and stay in a beautiful cabin on The Big Thompson River near the YMCA. I love to hike in the mountains and view the scenery and wildlife. It's the most beautiful place on earth, as far as I'm concerned. I turned 50 in 2009, it's hard to believe. Had to do something memorable for my 50th birthday, so I went to California and visited a couple of old friends that live in Santa Cruise. Had a great time, but I wouldn't want to live there. Getting away always makes me appreciate home a little more. I could do without the cold and snow though! But what are ya gonna do. They say everybody complains about the weather but nobody does anything about it. I play the guitar and I bought a keyboard last year and have been having fun with that. Playing music is very relaxing. I like to play video games, especially the Call of Duty series. Last year, out of millions of players I was ranked #5 on Call of Duty, World At War, the game of War. I enjoy doing family geneology. I found I am disantly related to Danial Boone and John Quincy Adams, the second president of the United States. Well, I've rambled on here. Don't know who will even read this, but to all my friends and former classmates out there, I wish you the best in this life. We only get one chance, so make it a good one. Adoius! Rick D,
