Rick's Story
Quick recap of the last 60 years starting with high school. Appendicitis, complicated by peritonitis, an allergic reaction to penicillin, a 106° fever, alcohol/ice baths for 4 days. New drug, erythromycin broke the fever or I would have died. All the doctors and nurses just looked at me and said they couldn’t believe I was alive alive. Not bad for the first year! Second year? Well, John Gloria and I were driving to Malibu. We just finished jacking up his Green Panel Van using 4x4 wooden blocks between the rear axle and the frame. John was passing a car in Malibu Canyon and had to swerve back quickly to avoid hitting a car he didn’t see. The blocks fell and the van flipped over about 7 times; we landed up on a little patch of dirt before the Canyon drops hundreds of feet below. Senior year. Tony Giovanetti and I, along with 2 other guys, were driving through the school parking lot and telling the plainclothes officers hiding in the camper van that everybody knew they were in there. When we parked we were confronted with guns pointed in our faces. We were hand cuffed, arrested, and marched through the school. Because I was 18 they charged me as adult and I went to jail, the others were charged as juveniles and went home. I dropped out of school to work full time to pay for a lawyer to defend me. Went to San Fernando night school so I could graduate with my class, which I did. Phew, I hope life turns normal. Register for the draft. Register for college to stay out of the draft. Still 1A. High school senior girlfriend, Linda Alsop is pregnant. Marriage. Linda continues school and graduates. Baby daughter born. Get entry level job with the Coca-Cola Company. Move to Bakersfield. Linda goes to school and graduates as an RN. Another baby was born. Move back down to LA for a promotion. I find Jesus, no He found me! Things are getting better. Served divorce papers. Thought God was going to fix everything? Divorce final. Running West Coast for Coca-Cola. God audibly spe...Expand for more
aks to me in a car, tells me to call Marilyn Stevens (Hearn), She's got somebody she wants me to meet. I Yell at God. I don't want to meet anybody. You didn't heal my marriage! A month later the same verbal message from God, Call Marilyn. This time I call Marilyn, she says “I've just been waiting for you to call”. She sets up a meeting with Terry Lee Cannon, a divorced mother of 4. Coca-Cola wants me to transfer to Atlanta. Can’t leave because I've got joint custody of my 2 girls. So they asked me to leave Coca-Cola. Terry, the kids and I hit it off. On a trip to Israel. God speaks to me in the garden of Gethsemani, this time inside my head, wants me to get serious with Terry. I do. Ask her to marry me. Married on October 14th. 1987, in the prayer room of Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa, where I was the missions pastor. Honeymoon in Barbados, then mission trips to Scotland, England. Ukraine. Russia and Isreal. Move to the Kingdom of Tonga to help the local churches. God changes our direction, back to the USA to help another ministry, publish books and coordinate public speaking engagements. Then work for an electrical contractor. Start my own electrical business. Work for a general contractor in Orange County. Terry homeschools the kids, goes back to school, becomes a court reporter, move to Lake County where she gets a job at the state court. Buy a house, retire and sell house. Buy motor home. Travel the country. 2021 my dad texts and says he fell and he couldn’t care for mom. We move back to my childhood home in Granada Hills to care for my parents. Mom dies in 2023. Dad agrees to move in with us. We moved back to Sac area. During move, June 2025, find out Terry has brain cancer. Four operations and 10 radiation treatments later she passed away on October 16th, 2 days after our 39th anniversary. She was a lover of Jesus, of our six kids. 17 grandkids, me and too many friends to count. All will surely miss her, but we’ll see her again. Even so, come quickly, Lord Jesus.
