Rick's Story
Being three score and two, an invitation to join the AARP, and nursing a devastating knee injury suffered while playing a game of pick-up Basketball, life is often as difficult to embrace as it is for my pants to fit my expanding waistline after indulging in one too many Pizzas.
Yet, as I look back on my life, I am only in the middle. Between birth and the greatest unanswered question posed to the human race, will there be Social Security benefits for the baby boomers, and will there be enough room in the sun belt states for all the aging bodies?
I was born the fifth of seventh children right after Elvis recorded his first big smash. A week later Don Larsen would pitch a perfect game in the World Series, and a month later our 34th President would win his second term. Perhaps in a subliminal fashion I was influenced. I have a passion for music, competitive sports and politics.
As a suburban youngster I engaged in typical rituals, watching reruns of idiot ...Expand for more
comedies, playing little league baseball and questioning authority. My interest in the aforementioned programs caused my IQ to degenerate and it was only after I turned TV off for my later adolescence years that I began to grow.
After high school I went to work at a local record store and made the management team within a few months. I bounced around the midwest's version of the golden triangle- college towns to industrial decay.
I switched careers from a retail manager to an advertising salesperson.First, for a small group of weekly newspapers, later, a major metro daily, I also worked briefly in the Insurance and telecommunications industry in a sales capacity. Presently I am employed as an account executive for a Television station. Recently I earned my Master's Degree from a private University.
Iÿm going to continue to embrace life as I approach my next half century. With a little self discipline my intellect will expand while my girth decreases.
