Rick's Story
Born in California. Got to Scottsdale in 59'. Just in time for 1st grade. I made it to Coronado in 67'. Attended ASU for a good part of the 70's (got a BA in Art Education and a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree). Never a teacher. I worked for Uncle Sam in several capacities. I served in the active Navy, Navy reserve, Army reserve/AZNG, active Army and finally the Post Office. I retired 30 Nov 2018......... If you're really bored and want the long story - I went to ASU right after high school and after two & a half years I decided the GI bill would be a better way to pay for school. I Joined the Navy in early 74'. Spent my time in an aviation squadron, got to see a few aircraft carriers and work the flight deck. My enlistment was 2 years 4 months on active duty and 3 years 8 months in the acitve reserves. I went back to ASU and began serving in the Navy reserve. I Changed my major for the umteenth time (another long story) and ended up in the College of Art (Photography). Met a girl while taking a PE class (Red Cross Water Safety Instructor, WSI). She became my girl friend. The Army ROTC sent me a Dear Veteran letter inviting me to join them and to continue my reserve requirement as an Army Officer. As a veteran I only needed 2 years of ROTC for a commission. ROTC paid better than the Navy reserve did so I moved on. My girl friend was talked into (another story) ROTC, too. She was not a vet so she did a 6 week summer training at Ft Knox so she only had to do 2 years of ROTC. After 2 years I was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant. I still had 1 m...Expand for more
ore year to graduate though, so I served in the Army Reserve and Az National Guard during that year. My girl friend was now my wife. She took her commission upon graduation. We had decided to go on active duty after graduation and then get out, after completing our required time, and teach. She was a PE major. I got my BFA in Ceramics (another story) and a BAEd in Art Education. After meeting her I thought I could be a teacher and have summers off with her. After several years on active duty She left when we started a family. I decided I would not like teaching and stayed in the Army (another story). After 12 years in the Army and a number of (interesting?) assignments we left. It was late 92' and the military was "downsizeing" after Desert Shield and Desert Storm. War in Europe was considered to be a non issue and the Army was gearing up for a light, world wide deployable force. I was trained in Heavy Artillery. We left the service and came back to AZ. Because of where our families were located we decided to live in the east valley. I wanted a job that would accept my military time for retirement and hoped to find that at Williams AFB but the government had other plans. My back up idea for work did include a uniform. Most of my jobs have made it easy for me to pick out work clothes. Since Jan of 93 I have delivered the mail in Chandler. I walk about 10 miles a day at work. I don't really think of this as work, it's like a reverse gym membership. I'm paid to exercise. My last 3 years I worked as a shift supervisor and part time carrier.
