Rick's Story
Life
I have three sons and a daughter, plus two step-daughters. Nathaniel, Sam, Shane and Hope. Grandsons: Elijah and Zion. 7 Granddaughters: Mekenna, Chloe, Lydia, Vivian, Naomi, Sariah and Cora. My step-daughters are Sarah and Kaitlin. Nate's in Alaska serving with the Army and Sam lives in Sweet Home & works in Linn County. Shane also lives in Sweet Home and works in Harrisburg. Hope and Daniel have 4 daughters and live in Jacksonville, FL.
I live in Coos Bay, am married to Laurie Potts and enjoy my brother and both of my sisters in the area. Life is good. I have very much to be thankful for. There haven't been many regrets, but knowing what I know now, and this being an alumni site, I would choose to redo the high school years. There are some of you who would not. It is what is was. I just feel I could have been better. Not that it would happen but maybe. :-) Any in agreement for redo?
I worked during the summer out of high school at the Coos Bay Public Schools maintenance department for Marvin George. Guys I worked with were Wally Collins, William "Slim" Koenemann, Wendell Miller, Oscar Sullivan, Floyd Goldbloom, and Vic Bradley. I became friends with each and all were skilled in their profession. Vic preached to me like a good Latter Day Saint and I ended up joining the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints about ten years later. After a summer of work & playing baseball in '70 I enrolled at SWOCC. We called it "SWOCC High." Didn't turn out for basketball, but played baseball in the spring of '71. Fred Woodsum, Frank Hanson, Pete Whitty and a North Bend High School friend named Gary Hickman, were guys I hung around with at SWOCC. The following summer I found myself working at Al Peirce Lumber Company out on Hwy 101. Jim Studley and I became good friends and during the course of the summer planned a trip to Waikiki. We spent just under 6 months beach bumming, working in hotels and attending rock concerts. I became acutely aware of how small Coos Bay really was during my time on the island, which of itself, could be easily traversed in a matter of hours and we did so often, in our '57 Chevy we purchased. Honolulu was big and provided a lot of excitement for two small-town boys. We came back to the mainland for Hickman's wedding in February of '72. During the course of the next 4 years I found myself working for Al Peirce again, Georgia Pacific, and Weyerhaeuser Company, plus, kept the college credits creeping in while attending SWOCC and SOC. Ron Springer was the boss there at Weyerhaeuser while pulling on the chain with Steve Barnes and Rick Susick. Nancy, my sister, married a North Bend grad, Stan Myers in '73 while brother Ron continued his studies at Oregon State. Sis Sal, the last one in the nest, attended MHS graduating in '75.
While working for Weyerhaeuser I transferred to the Springfield plant mainly to get out of Coos Bay. Rented an apartment and biked to work.
Between our 3rd and 4th child, I decided to go get my Bachelor's Degree at the University of Oregon. I became a Duck. Ron was already a Beaver so it made sense to form the rivalry. Attaining that degree was easier than I thought, even while holding down another part time job or two. Having matured through the years, I had a greater cause and an inner drive that was absent before. I noticed a nice routine settling in and good grades came often. Ending up in the School of Architecture, I focused on a degree in Planning, Public Policy, and Management. During that final year pushing towards graduation, I worked practicums at Wistec (Willamette Science and Technology Center)& the U of O Media Relations Department.
Some of you devoted to KYNG Radio (one of the Top-40 radio stations here in Coos Bay during our school years) might recall the DJ spinning the tunes; maybe it was KOOS, but Melody Ward Leslie was my mentor there at U of O for my final practicum. She was Melody Ward back in her DJ days before Rich Waters took over commandeering the vinyl & turntables. I loved her then--churning out those rock n roll hits over the airwaves (rocking the town) and seemed to always succeed in sneaking in a couple of "heavier" than normal songs---which appealed to me. Those WERE the days.....
I am married to Kathy Westenskow, from North Bend. Kathy is all that is good and more!
