Rick's Story
School
When I was in High School most of the people I ran around with were already well out of High School or attending different High Schools & several friends that I did have at my school weren't allowed back in our senior year. I never "really" considered myself a troublemaker in school, although I have to admit that I ran around with alot of people who were. But for the most part many of my friends were already in their mid 20's while I was teenager. I didn't play many organized sports in High School & when asked why, I always said that trophies wouldn't put gas in the car. (I probably wasn't good enough to have helped win any anyway). Right after High School I was accepted into the I.B.E.W. Apprenticeship Program & was by far the youngest one in my class. They only accepted 15 that year & we all became good friends. However I have lost track of many of them since we topped out. I have taken quite a few technical classes at Ivy-Tech, but have never pulled it all together to finish my degree. I do plan on doing that in the near future.

rical Apprenticeship through the I.B.E.W. Local#16 from 1983-1987, I was 19 when I started & 23 when I became a Journeyman Electrician. I worked just about everywhere during my Apprenticeship. I was 27 when I left my job as a Superintendent for Industrial Contractors to become an Electrician for Whirlpool. I still often wonder if I made the right choice. I think I did, but who knows? I keep my card/license up to date & can always go back if need be. I have been with Whirlpool for 12 years now & I'm what they call a "Lead Advisor" in charge of 3rd shift Maintenance. I have 3 Supervisors who report to me, but I run the Electricians myself. I currently have approximatly 60 Maintenance people on my shift. (All of them good ones by the way). I'm also the "Maintenance Apprenticeship Coordinator" & responsible for hiring new Electricians. I like my job for the most part (mostly due to the people I work with) although I do tend to spend a lot more time in the Plant than I would like to, but thats life.
UPDATE: After working for Whirlpool for over 23 years, I moved to Coloma, MI & in 2015 I started working for Honeywell Aerospace in South Bend, IN where I'm a Sr. Electrical Substation Engineer.
