Rick's Story
I own a certified public accounting practice, still in Casa Grande, married Melanie Swearingen (CGUHS 1977) back in 1987, and am happier than I ever thought I could be. I have a strange patch-work family. Melanie (my wife) is a better person than I ever deserved to hook-up with, and I still have not quite figured out how I wound-up with her. She makes my life a very happy place to live, and I thank God for her every day. I love her more than life, and we have lots of fun together.
I have four kids. Amy (born 1981) from my first marriage, I raised her from the time her mom and I split, back in 1985. She is now a nurse and has a daughter of her own. Robyn (born 1980) and Lesle (born 1977) are my step-daughters. They are biological sisters, and Melanie adopted them in a previous marriage. See - now things are starting to get complicated. Last but not least is my son Judd (born 1977). Judd gave me the strangest telephone call I have ever received. In July of 2003 he called me from Winslow Arizona. What made the call strange is that until that telephone call, I did not know he existed. Oops! I told you things were a little strange.
He now works with me in my accounting practice and lives about three blocks down the street from our house.
Melanie and I have six grandchildren, and I think I was born to be Grandpa. I love it!
Melanie and I love adventures; we go on lots of them. We put several thousand miles on our Harley Davidsons each year, and I do ...Expand for more
my best to break the mold of the typical Certified Public Accountant.
My life has been blessed with incredible family, friends, and people I have met along the way. If you are reading this, you are probably one of those incredible people.
Update, November 11, 2009.
My son, Judd recently passed the CPA exam. I am very proud of him. When he gets the last of the paperwork done to get his CPA certificate he will become a partner in the firm.
Eighteen months ago we had a new addition, our daughter Lesle added a grandson to the list. We now have seven grandchildren. About two months ago our daughter Amy informed us number eight is on the way and should arrive in May.
Melanie and I sold our touring Harley (we still have our cruiser left). We participated in a church auction in Sarasota Florida and won a 1971 Corvette Stingray, it is a show car with only 60,000 miles on it. Melanie and I flew to Florida and attempted to drive the car back to Arizona. The car has a 454 and a 4 on the floor, and really flies. A broken rocker arm nut in Fort Stockton Texas meant we spent the rest of the trip riding with a very interesting couple driving a flat bed tow truck back to Arizona. Believe me, the couple that drove the truck was a story all of its own.
Since then we have put the original engine in storage, and had a custom 600hp racing engine built. The installation is almost complete, and we hope to compete in some road rallies when life slows down a little.
