Rick's Story
Hi All!
This is Rick Storey. Many of you knew me as Rick Boese in my teens. I used my stepfather's last name until I graduated from high school.
I live in Fountain Hills, Arizona, a Phoenix suburb. After high school, I attended college in Iowa City. While at U. of Iowa, I joined ROTC and started a 24-year Air Force career upon graduation. I experienced many enjoyable and challenging assignments, including tours in Germany and the Pentagon and two tours as a commander.
The military was a great experience for both my family and me. While stationed in South Carolina in the early 80s, I met and married an Air Force nurse named Debby from Ottumwa, Iowa. We have two children. Our son Craig, age 26, is serving on a Navy aircraft carrier and our daughter Jean, age 25, is a medical student on a full Air Force scholarship.
I worked in health care management during most of my military career and loved spending most of it in Sun Belt states, including twice in Arizona. When I retired in 1995, I was fortunate enough to retire in the rank of Colonel. Arizona's dry, year-round sunny climate made i...Expand for more
t the preference for life after the military.
My life went through many changes after leaving the military. The most significant was a divorce in 2002 after 20 years of marriage. The other was my decision, after the divorce, to pursue a much different career path. I decided to pursue a lower profile, less demanding path away from management responsibilities.
I'd have to say I've achieved mixed results in this pursuit. I've spent most of my time in auto sales, but recently exited due the weak economy. I'm not employed at the present time. Although my military pension would allow me to, I don't want to fully retire for several more years. So I'm trying to figure out which opportunities would work best for me now.
The picture of me that I attached was taken last month (Nov 09) on the top of Camelback Mountain in Phoenix. I decided to spend Veteran's Day tackling the 1,500-foot rocky climb. It was just a few days after celebrating the my 60th birthday. I felt I did pretty well for an old guy.
Thanks for reading my story. I look forward to reading yours as well.
Your friend, Rick
