Ricki's Story

Life After traveling and living all over the U.S. and working in a variety of careers, I recently moved to Yuma, Arizona, to be closer to my sister Evonne (class of 1972). A year ago I returned to my first career of teaching and am now in my second year as a sixth grade language arts teacher in a junior high school. Shortly after moving back to Yuma, I met a wonderful man at our church. We were married in November 2003. He has two adopted children, age 16 and 14. High school was fun but I've got to admit that my life has been far more interesting and a lot more enjoyable since graduating from Southside. For me, Southside is a pleasant memory but it was definitely not the "best" life had to offer. In fact, my life as it is now holds the fulfillment, peace and contentment that most of us are looking for. I'd love to hear from my Southside classmates and anyone else who wants to remember our former selves as teenagers who thought they knew everything! LOL School When I see news reports about kids who react adversely to peer pressure and bullying, I'm grateful I didn't use violence as a solution to all the negative stuff I expe...Expand for more
rienced going through school, particularly in high school. For me, high school was one of the cruelest environments I've had the misfortune to experience. It was just one huge popularity contest, not only with my classmates, but with certain teachers who also bought into it. If I ever had the opportunity to do it all over again, of course, knowing what I know now, I'd speak my mind more often, not care what others thought of me or my family, and tell some people exactly what they could do with themselves! College College was great! For the first time in my school experience, I was graded on what I did in class and not on who I was. It didn't matter where I came from, what kind of clothes I wore, whether I as pretty or not---none of that mattered. The most important part of college, though, was not the course work, but folk dancing. I made some great friends through folk dancing at Ball State and I found something I was good at and something that so very enjoyable. Georgi, Frank, Doris, Neal, and everyone else who hung out at the women's gymnasium building---thank you for your friendship and for sharing something so beautiful with me!
